Benue State University, Makurdi was established in 1991 by the Benue State Government under the leadership of Rev Fr Adasu who was the then democratically elected Governor of Benue State.

In 1993, the stated admitting students into the 1991/1992 academic session in the following faculties. Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Social Sciences. This is when students started school at Benue State University, Makurdi. In 1993/1994, the first set of students in Faculties of Law and Faculty of Management Sciences. Other facilities that came in later was Faculty of Enviromental Sciences in the year 2014.
Today, the university is very large and accomodates several other faculties and departments. The school has produced highly respected graduates who excelled in academics and are doing excellently well in their careers.
The Government of Benue State is doing her best to continuously improve the standard of education in the university by providing the enabling environment in form of structures and renumeration, as well as general welfare and security of staff.
The current Faculties, departments and centres are very attractive and offer mouth watering courses and programmes. Today, the university boasts of Faculty of Medicine and a University Teaching Hospital that is accredited by the Nigerian University Commission.

Benue state university is a university owned by the Benue state government and is located in Markurdi the capital of the state and was established in 1992. The university is the only state university and admits students irrespective of their religious and cultural backgrounds. Benue state university was established so indigenes of the state could easily access to quality education, the state has a federal university but it could no longer contain them. The university provides accommodation for its students.
