Kharakhorum Museum

Our tour guide is a high school student who just started his summer part job a week before. I am amazed by his English, knowledge, and enthusiasm on history. He gave us a very enjoyable tour and his tour elicited my interests in Mongolia history.

A very good museum displaying the archaeological findings about Mongolia

Historic information about Kharakhorum and Chinggis Khaan life and family.

A small but interesting, informative, well laid out and well maintained museum for such a small city, and what must be a very limited budget. Lots to read about, lots of maps and other visual aids to help you understand the history and significance of this region, not just because of the Mongol empire of Chinggis and Koblai Khan, but also the Turkish, Chinese and even European influences on the region. A singularly informative and fairly honest set of displays that do not put Chinggis on a pedestal (as most Mongolian monuments quite literally do) but show where he and his ancestors went, and what happened afterward. A must see in Kharkhorin, and a big part of why Kharkhorin is not just a place where something happened a long time ago, but one of the best places to visit in Mongolia. Plus(!) if you have a strong constitution, head to the gher they constructed outside for a sample of fermented yak liquor, and the opportunity to try on some traditional Mongolian garb while you get over the experience!

Very serene place to visit.

Great selection of artifacts to explain the discovery of “lost” Mongol capital. You can also see the timeline of Mongolia over course of history. I found the scale model of the ancient capital most fascinating. Special thanks to the young English Museum guide who explained to me every bit with patience.

Once upon a time, there was a city named Karakorum, which served as the capital city of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Nothing much is left today though, and archaelogical excavations in the early 20th century led to it's rediscovery. most of the relics and artefacts found since then are now housed in this museum. Whilst quite small in comparison to other museums in other countries I've been to in East Asia, the quality of the exhibits here are impressive. If you are ever nearby, this place is worth a visit or two.

The museum is even better than the one in UB. The temple is probably the place I enjoyed the most during our tour. Inside the walls you can appreciate the quiet and wonder about the past.

Fantastic and super modern. There was no one! We got our own private guide. Gives you an excellent overview of Mongolia's history. Also a 3 d map (maquette) of Mongol-era Karakorum which is really super.

This place is the truest glimpse into past history of the city of Kharakhorum. Setting the scene for the Mongolian Empire, and the capital of the world for many year, this museum gives great detail of the legacy, legend and context of the old forgotten city. Well worth a visit for any western or local traveller!

Wonderful experience, amazed by the history behind the the City, learned an interesting history of the monastery.

Of all the Mongolian museums I have visited, and I have visited nearly nine, they do a fantastic job here of bringing you the historic experience in a very postmodern museum. The work that a number of archaeological expeditions have done is truly fantastic and they have recently unearthed some great pieces of history. This museum does a great job of taking you through the various empires and histories that have gone through Kharkorin as this location was Central to a number of empires historically.
