St. Joseph's Church in Maha Payagala is a venerable place of worship dedicated to St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus. This historic church boasts a rich heritage, with very old St. Joseph statues and a miraculous Marian statue, adding a sense of reverence to the sacred space. With a community of around 400 Catholic families, primarily consisting of fishermen, St. Joseph's Church plays a pivotal role in their lives. The roots of this Catholic community extend back to the Portuguese era, and the first church in the village was erected during the Dutch period under the guidance of Rev Fr Manuel Miranda, a Goan Oratory priest. St. Joseph's Church is not just a religious landmark but a living testament to the enduring faith and history of Maha Payagala.
