This church has the biggest and the most stunning bell tower in Sri Lanka. Church is morethan 145 years old. Church dedicated to St. James the Great, Apostle of Jesus. Church has an old arts, wallpaintings, Oldest St.James Statue. Also the church's flag post is very thick and big. Church is popular among hindus and buddists as well. Celebrates its feast last sunday of July annually. Church located on a small mountain. Theres no much parking space. Church Feast of this church is the most grand scale feast among other churches feasts in this area. This church is the heart of Mutwal Area.

Very holy and silence place for worshipers of catholic faith. Friendly and caring church administration gives the worshipers a serenity of presence of God.

One of the big ancient churches in Colombo built in English colony period with majestic architecture. This church is always very calm and gives a pleasant feeling some sort of relief whenever you visit here. Church has a tall tower with a huge bell on top of it. They ring this bell on special occasions and it's rhythmic and feels like coming from sky.
Further on mass time specially Thursdays they display a unique statue of St James the great brought from Santiago Spain.
It's a miraculous place for believers. There are lot of miracle stories around .

Really beautiful church in this hidden location. Very beautiful interior paintings and style inside. Ancient paintings and long windows and olden doors. This is truly a hidden gem here in Sri Lanka. They also have a belfry on the side which looks very nice and has an ancient look with 3 bells inside. This church looks like all the older style churches in Europe.

Beautiful old church which looks like it has a lot of Dutch architecture. Color tinted glasses, beautiful wall paintings and murals and large wooden doors. Has a lot of medieval charm to it. Was attending a friend's wedding and couldn't help but be taken in with its beauty. Worth checking out!!

One of the most beautiful elegant churches in Sri Lanka, undoubtedly it resembles huge churches like in Europe, with very colourful paintings. It's a very powerful church being blessed. You must visit this church in your life. (have it in your bucket list)
St. James day is dedicated on Thursday. You may notice & experience that lots of non believers visit this great powerful church.

St. James’ Church Mutwal was built in 1872, with the moral support, dedication and devotion of the Mutwal fisher folk. Rev Fr. Peter Elari was the parish priest who invited Hillarian Sillari, the Archbishop of Colombo to consecrate the church in the name of St. James the Great. When the church was planned, it was to be small but the poor people of the area protested and wanted a bigger church to be built in order to accommodate a large congregation.

The poor agreed to contribute generously towards the construction of the church, and also agreed to contribute an additional. 10% out of their daily earnings to the building committee, which was set up to collect funds for the construction of the church. Thus, the hard work of the poor fisher folks contributed to the present magnificent edifice.

Almost all Thursdays of the year thousands of people used to arrive at St. James’ Church Mutwal, Colombo 15 with much devotion and true faith to St. James the Great to receive their requested needs from the great Saint.

The 134th year celebration of the church will commence at St. James’ church Mutwal on Sunday, 3 1st July 2005.

One of the oldest church in Sri Lanka.There are many paintings inside.Peaceful place.Not a crowded place.
