Location is in the Heart of the Colombo. Having the main access of a local railway station as well....

I had a great experience at this hostel!! The owner is a very sweet and caring woman, she cares so much about her guests and what happens in and around the hostel. She really has everyone's best interests at heart. It's a wonderful family business and I met some awesome fellow travellers! The breakfast is included and it's walking distance from the train and bus stations and main attractions around Colombo. To get here you have to go through a parking garage on the lower floor next to the train station, then go up the stairs. The rooms have AC and mosquito nets as well. Overall a wonderful experience :)

Central hostel super close to bus station and train station. Perfect for transit, for 1 or 2 days. The lady at the reception is super sweet and made sure we had everything we needed. Good value for price and location with breakfast included.

Stayed here for 2 nights whilst in Colombo. Perfect walking distance to the main tourist attractions. The owner is lovely and treats all guests as her own children even waiting up for them after a night out to make sure they get back safely. The owner had multiple issues with local residents but dealt with them quickly and appropriately ensuring the safety of all guests. Breakfast was simple but delicious.

The lady who runs this hostel is the sweetest person ever! She made me feel so safe. I stayed here for 5 nights and was amazed by how incredible she is in making sure that everyone is comfortable. There was one local guy who made the guests feel uncomfortable but she was quick to attend to it and make sure that everybody at the hostel felt safe. The place is super clean and tidy at all times. She makes a serious effort to ensure that. The location is incredible

It was my first hostel in Sri Lanka, and I immediately felt a warm welcome by the lovely lady who even stayed up til 4 in the morning to check me in (due to my night flight). She and the other people working here are super caring, friendly and always make sure you feel comfortable. I loved that breakfast was included, the room had an AC and the location was also great: calm, but on walking distance from the markets and beach.

Good hostel. Well located, at a walking distance to the main spots in Colombo as well as to the rail way and bus station. Beds are comfortable, shower works well and the wifi is good. They keep the premisses clean and tidy. A fair breakfast is also served. It has a chill and familiar atmosphere. Good to meet other travelers. I would stay again

Fun place to stay. Host strives to make the guests comfortable and likes to have a good laugh. The place is clean and near some good eat markets.

Update: I came back to Downtown Monkey hostel near the end of my trip and The lady manager was, yes again, the most inviting hostess and always made me die laughing. I would 100 percent come back just to see her. I made her a promise to bring her all of Switzerland’s chocolate so I have to come back anyways.

I felt comfortable in this Hostel from the first moment on!!
The owner is a openharted and really smart woman who is tolerant to all nationalities. She‘s cooking delicious breakfast, including egg, bread, bananas, jam, butter ☺
I had good conversations with her and the people around and would definitely come back whenever I‘m back in Colombo!

The bad reviews that are written are mostly about problems concerning other visitors but not about the Hostel itself!

One of the best hostels I stayed in SriLanka. Walkable distance from Colombo Fort.

The hostel has a peaceful atmosphere. The care taker Rani is the life of the hostel. The breakfast served was so delicious. You will feel the hostel like a home away from home.

A safe and secure place for solo travellers.

I stayed one day, i had to catch my train the next day and the train station is just 900 metres far.
Very nice place and lovely family, very helpful. For sure I recommended and I will come back again!!

Once you are there you will find that the owner is very nice and talkative. She cares about you and your needs. I was very early and could the check in anyway.
The place is clean, well situated near the station and the fort, there is hot shower and beds are totally fine. To sum it up, I would say that it's a good price/quality ratio!

There is a lovely lady, who is managing the place. You get breakfast in morning: Egg, Jam Toast and a banana.

You need to pre-book it. It's a small place, so there is a high chance, you won't get a room if you show up without a booking.

The hostel is pretty good as it is in the middle of the town. Everything is nearby. Central Bus Stand and Fort Railway Stn is on 5-10 mins walking distance. The host is very nice and we speak a lot. She prepares very good breakfast every morning and takes a lot of efforts to keep everything neat and clean. Definitely recommended while having a short stay in Colombo.

Don't let the entrance put you off, up two flights of stairs is a cosy, safe hostel. Its extremely basic in all the right ways. The dorms all have plenty of fans, plug sockets and an ensuite shower and toilet. Communal kitchen with a free breakfast of toast, fruit eggs and tea. Perma the wonderful host helped us out no end with lost baggage at the airport, letting us use her phone and making calls for us until we had located it. Really well situated for fort train station and the bus station. Amazing value for money

First time I stay in a hostel. The experience at Downtown Monkey far exceeded my expectations. Cleanliness was a priority, the place is kept spotlessly clean. Ventilation, fans and living space all contribute to a very comfortable environment. The price ... A backpackers dream USD 6. Most important Kamari who cares for the hostel and its guests is a Sri Lanka treasure. It was not just myself that she so kindly cared for and provided information, it was every guest that came to stay in the hostel. Thank you Kamari and thank you Downtown Monkey.

Cheap hostel across the Secretariat train station in the centre of Colombo. The lady who runs the hostel is very sweet and hospitable. She makes you breakfast in the morning (between 7 and 10) and is always taking care of everything and every-one.
I would surely recommend this hostel
