In 2000, active work began on the construction of the first Intercession Church of the city of Stepnogorsk. By the end of September 2000, the walls of the temple were erected, the dome was installed, consecrated and the newly erected cross was raised above the temple. With the completion of finishing work inside the temple on June 28, 2002, on the day of memory of St. Jonah, the miracle worker Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia, the newly created church was consecrated by His Grace Eleutherius, Bishop of Chimkent and Akmola. The Church of the Icon of the Intercession of the Mother of God became the first building included in the Orthodox complex. The construction of the Cathedral of St. Eleutherius was started immediately after the solemn consecration of the Church of the Intercession. On September 7, 2003, all preparatory work was completed. Since that time, systematic work began on the construction of the walls of the majestic building of the future cathedral. The new temple is several times larger than the old Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God and can accommodate much more believers (about 1000 people).
