조선중기 호남사림의 거두였던 곤재 정개청이 1589년 기축옥사에 연루되어 유배지에서 병사하자 그의 문인들이 스승의 신원운동을 전개하면서 건립한 서원이다. 1678년 자산서원이라는 사액을 받았다. 지방유형문화재 제146호 우득록 목판이 소장돼 있다.
