Bearhouse

"Kumanoya Fujito" 熊の家藤戸　means "Fujito's House of the Bear". Run by Kohei　康平 Fujito and wife, Sachiko　幸子 Fujito - very friendly owners who speak English and welcome everyone.

The store was started by Takeki 竹喜Fujito, Kohei　康平San’s father. Takeki　竹喜　San was a master wood carver whose work has been exhibited in Tokyo and installed permanently at Tsuruga　鶴雅 Wings hotel.

The store is a wonderful continuation of the Fujito family's talented artistic heritage and Akan Ainu Kotan culture.

The store stocks a huge range of decorative wood carvings, jewellery, souvenirs, Ainu cultural designs, Akan local products, but the highlights are the original artworks by Kohei 康平　and Takeki　竹喜

The store displays some of Takeki 竹喜Fujito's sculptures (not for sale) and the modern original works by Kohei 康平Fujito, which blend current and traditional styles into functional and beautiful objects.

Kohei 康平　Fujito's work ranges from pieces specially made for galleries - such as an intricately carved wooden iPhone cover, filligree watch band and case, hanging mobile art with "moreu" symbols to one-off unique bespoke sunglasses to graphic designs of the store's namesake, the iconic bear, daily products such as printed designs on t-shirts, bags, towels, socks.

His designs feature Ainu iconography, merging with his individual contemporary vision into items we can use everyday.

One of his works was created for Luciano Benetton's global art project. It's a wooden carved frame with a small "inaw" (shaved wood used in Ainu ceremonies/ prayers), with 2 pieces made. One piece is now in Italy, the other is in this cosy family store.

The store also holds different wood carvings and sculptures by other artists, so there's a variety of styles and products to choose from. I bought some wooden carvings of owls, made by Mr Seo from Bihoro.

I also loved the printed designs by Kohei康平-San which were on socks and towels. His design of the Ainu bear is also vibrant and dynamic - something that is contemporary and cool.

Kohei-康平　San is very humble and kind, so you will need to ask to see his original works as they are not presented to visitors or shown with signage. Sachiko幸子 is also thoughtful and kind. Please support them.

Kumanoya熊の家 Fujito is like a secret art gallery. You must have an open heart and a patient word to see the beautiful treasures inside. I highly recommend you visit this store for the gallery of work and quality crafted designs that are made with heartfelt emotions.

こちらのお店が催事していたので楽しみいきました。
素敵な作品があったので【こちらは販売してますか？】と聞くと【売り物ではありませーん！】とおどけた感じ2度も言われました。
普通に販売はしてませんと言ってくださればいいのになぁと、その後もなんとなく嫌な気持ちがだけが残りながら催事を後にしました。
昔からご商売をされていて良い作品を扱うお店だけに残念でした。
