the temple grounds are spacious and surrounded by tall trees and greens, the atmosphere is really calm and peaceful, perfect for a relaxing walk. entrance fee is required but you get to see so much - beautiful temple grounds, buildings, garden, old architecture and artifacts, recreation of lots of artwork and scenes, it's pretty interesting. i love how serene the place is and you can just take your time to explore.

Serene. Peaceful. Blissful. Amazing place to visit to allow your eyes tk feast upon the magnificent landscapes of the Zuiganji Temple. It was not crowded and there were photo opportunities around every corner and at every angle. Lots of history in this place. A very easy place to get to from Matsushima and just 25 minutes by train from Sendai station. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area and are looking for some inner solace.

The larger temple in town, it is an amazing place to visit especially new year's eve for hatsumode. You get the chance to ring the bell with the aid of monks. There are no food vendors like in temples/shrines in Tokyo. The temple includes a museum which has English descriptions. A must visit when in town

This temple has been recently restored and it is beautiful, period. The carvings where you can still the original paint, the restored wall paintings where original materials have been used, the beautiful zen, moss, and rose gardens. And at the entrance seeing the stumps of the old cedar trees ruined by the tsunami and next to them the newly planted trees. On one of the centenary cedar trees you can see pink orchids growing in big bunches. You cannot visit Japan and not visit Matsushita

Mind blowing atmosphere. Historical place in Matsushima, lots of things to watch and explore. Walking around in the evening is highly recommended.
Photos are not allowed inside the main hall.
Entrance fee is ¥700.

Sadly you're not allowed to take pictures from inside, but it was a really pretty establishment.
The walls and general decor were very pretty.

Quite expensive when compared to other temples in japan. The temple not so huge but really nice. Have museum inside but cannot take a photo. Super easy to buy entry ticket at automatic machine.

One of my favourite temples in Japan. The decorations were amazing but my favourite part was the zen garden. Best one I’ve seen

Not gonna lie had very low expectations but I was so wrong this place is magnificent. The approach with the cedars flanked by mystical meditation caves is iconic. Museum is magical and of course has a lot of Date Masume memorabilia. The inside of the kondo is magnificent but you can't take pictures so you'll have to trust me. I wanted to take a sneaky one but I didn't have to courage... Sorry 😞

Beautiful grounds and temple. So many huge cedar trees, so it smells great. The mossy ground is perfect!

A Tempel in matsushima. It's the old clan building of the Date clan. It is famous for its amazing art style and their beautiful wall screens. The entire Tempel is a journey into the old clan times of Japan and give a glimpse into those times. If you have the possibility to visit, you should!

Beautiful interior rooms. Gold foiled panels with impressive sceneries painted more than 200 years ago! The temple is very well preserved!
