Ebino Plateau

Tips and recomandations
It's difficult to find information about public transports and the opening of hiking trails (volcanic activity). We wanted to cross from ebino kagen to takachiho-gawara but due to lake of information we finaly gave up.
I think may be possible in 7hours if there is no volcanic activity but you have to properly plan the return in bus or taxi (not easy).
We recommend the following trail : Ebino kagen > karakuni dake > east onami lake trail > Ebino kagen. In this direction because the trail between karakunidake and onami lake is made of high wooden steps which are easier going down. It takes around 7 hours (picnic, pictures and chat included)

This a beautiful area to hike! It's has several crater lakes and is on a volcanic mountain range. You could spend a couple of days hiking the trails available. The museum is neat too, providing info about the flora and fauna. This is a must see for locals and travelers alike!

If you enjoy hiking and ending it with an onsen (hot spring) soak, this place is for you. It can be quite challenging to do a day trip as you'd need to pretty much take the first/second transport in and the last bus out is pretty early. Do check with multiple sources on the time table just in case.

At the Ebino plateau (kogen), there are multiple peaks you can hike to, but if you're not staying nearby, it's difficult to top them all and you'd have to make a choice based on your ability and judgement for a good in/out point. There are spots where the path is blocked. Do consult with the updated maps.

A fantasy land for anyone who loves volcanism. Nice visitor center that introduces the forces at play in the area, plus plentiful parking. Hiking trails lead to a number of sites including crater lakes, fumaroles, volcanic peaks, and unforgettable scenery. From the top of the Karakuni-dake trail, views extend all the way to Sakurajima, which some say is Japan’s most active volcano.

Nice hikes from here. Foot bath by the shops/restaurants/rest area by the parking lot. Toilets available as well.

Lots of trails and beautiful scenery

This place is just beautiful.

Very beautiful place but unfortunately the road at the top us closed due to volcanic activity.

Amazing nature, great views. The tracks are good, but you should wear appropriate shoes. Requires a good fitness level. Amazing experience.

Great hiking and onsen area

Approx 6km trekking in Ebino Plateau however some paths were under maintenance so we cant finish the whole loop. A must go for those who love to trek to see a breath taking view!

Good trails, although check volcanic activity before planning a trip

Starting point for a few trails to see active and inactive volcanoes. Plenty of paid parking available and some restaurants, shops, bath house and even an ice rink for ice skating

I am not rating the parking itself but more the area. Highlight of our trip in kyushu, dont miss those treks!
