Amazing first stay at Yoyokaku. The property is old but very well maintained. The staff are so helpful and very friendly. The garden, even in winter, is so beautiful and serene. The room is very clean and very comfortable. The inn is decorated elegantly and ages very well. The reading room, dining room, galleries are all simply and tastefully done. One small suggestion is to increase the water pressure in the bathroom as it is quite weak. Other than that it was one of the best stays in Japan for me. Thank you so much for the hospitality and we look forward to coming back.

One of my favorite traditional inns in all of Japan. Highlights are the central garden and the food. Typically ryokan meals are good but not outstanding. Yoyokaku’s meals are stunning. Staff is super polite and helpful. Rooms are comfortable. Shared bath is hot. Feels so good.

One of the most traditional ryokans I’ve stayed in! The staffs still wear kimono 👘 and course dinners are served in the room. Loved every dish and how the ingredients were prepared! Just slightly worried about the staffs knees having to kneel on the tatami repeatedly 🥲

With this 130 year old history of the ryokan, it should probably be considered a cultural heritage site? But it’s very well maintained, and although there weren’t heat pipes running through the buildings, they were considerate enough to place old school heaters in every corner. The layout of the ryokan was also what made the experience. Corridors and rooms are surrounded by Japanese gardens and koi ponds. It was a privilege to take a stroll especially when the sun was out.

We loved the staffs (most of them have been working at the establishment for some time and genuinely care about their guests). We worked hard to communicate despite the language barrier.

We’ll definitely stay again if the opportunity arises!

P.s. their public bath is quite small, only an indoor bath.

Quite simply, one of the most authentic, heartfelt ryokan experiences in my life.
The kaiseki was even more exceptional.

Atmosphere has nothing but absolute traditional cozy. Full of hospitality. Private garden that has nicely taken care of pine trees, little pond, tiny bridge...
Pretty. Also sees there a limitedNumber of rooms you could have a nice privacy, guaranteed to have a relaxed moment.
Dishes are nicely less flavored. The natural flavor of the ingredients is complemented ✨

Fantastic ryokan, a short walk across the bridge from Karatsu-jo castle.
Very attentive service, beautiful garden and delicious food.

The hot bath was relaxing, and the room was very comfortable. The three of us stayed with the breakfast-only package, and the service was well worth the price. If I were to list one gripe, a small one at that, would be that I was able to connect to a wireless router, but didn't get any internet connection: I had a data SIM, so I used that instead.

Oh, the breakfast was delicious, too.

I had spent time at this calm and historical Japanese traditional ryokan with my wife last month. It was awesome to stay and have its accommodations and supper during my all vacation. This ryokan was started more than 120 years ago. All buildings are more than 100 years and most pine trees in the garden are more 200 years old also. They knew how to serve their guests, I would like to recommend you strongly if you want to get a really good healing, you will never regret. I am gonna plan to visit there once again with my parent soon.

We came here from Seoul on whim. Spent two nights. Wonderful place. If you want to experience a traditional Japanese inn, and great Japanese food, then this is the place to stay. Fly from Seoul to Fukuoka, then take a train to Higashi-Karatsu.

can't believe someone gave one star rating to this place. the service, hospitality, food, staffs, everything was perfect. no other hotels and ryokans I've been managed to present all of that. worth visiting karatsu just for this ryokan.

Yoyokaku - Superb Presentation and Service

We had an excellent 9-course meal (I actually lost count) at this wonderfully historic and multi-generational restaurant and hotel. We enjoyed everything from the Tone persimmon wrapped by sliced radish with flower of Tsurumuraski leaf to the Grilled fig, pine nut, and snow pea with arrowroot. All of the senses were engaged, but especially taste, smell and sight. The owner dropped by after the meal and we gave her an enthusiastic review. If I lived nearby, this would be my go to place.
