在校時の生徒数は60名程で複式学級無し、芦花部や円など近隣と比較するとマンモス校。
校舎に沿って100m走路が確保された広大な校庭を持つ。
南西諸島の形の岩を置いた池や、高頻度で脱走するアマミノクロウサギ等の飼育小屋が有ったが、今も有るかどうか。
校歌の歌詞が小学校にしては難解、作詞者の姓名をひっくり返すと作曲者になる。
夏休み明け、校庭中が野生のヤギのフンだらけで閉口する。
