The Aso Volcano that has not yet extinguished, on the way there is very beautiful. Even if surrounded by mountains, black soil or brown that looks arid but very beautiful Like falling into another waving because of the origin Full of cherry blossom trees, but when going up the hill, they cut into a bald mountain. The crater had a very strong smell of sulfur. But get the authenticity of nature.

We don’t drive so we took a taxi from Aso Station to Sensuikyo which cost about Y3000. Started hike at 9am. Going up from here to Nakadake is an easier route and you’ll end at Aso Sanjo Bus terminal to catch the bus back to Aso Station. There is no spot to take a bite during hike and toilet is available only at Sensuikyo. Pack enough water, keep neck warm, durable windproof warm jacket, gloves and hiking stick if need. Took us 5hrs to complete but we were slow. For locals and seasoned hikers will be much faster. Winds are extremely strong and during the last part at descend, we experienced a desert storm so be well covered. Black sand will enter mouth and nostrils. We were blessed with sunny skies in April and with level 1 warning, we were able to view the amazing crater at the rim. A truly awesome hike to see the force of nature.

Really beautiful National park, don’t miss it! The rolling fields feel like you are in telletubby land. 🥺💕 it’s so cute! Research ahead of time, some other volcanic gasses are too high to approach the rim (this was the case for my visit) still, I highly recommend it! 🥰

Very interesting views. visited in the Spring and weather was just amazing and wasn't too hot. Travel there by car and you will see more. This is one of the greatest sites in Japan to drive through or hike through magnificent volcanic landscapes and see active volcanoes is the national park.
Actually, the Kuju Mountains, is the highest on the Kyushu island, draw hikers with an alluring network of routes, Mount Aso allows travellers to view its active crater. Hot springs are a byproduct of volcanoes, and Yufuin, Kurokawa, Beppu are some of the top onsen towns in the country. This park is one of the oldest national parks and it is protected by the government.

This is my favorite national park. All the volcanos are amazing, the view is extraordinary. Since Mt. Aso had a level 2 eruption so we couldn’t climb the top but we did climb the other volcano a bit. It’s amazing how big the crater is and Mt. Aso venting. If your a tourist and your coming to Kumamoto this is a must-go place.

Really nice place to drive around, during any season, but especially in spring or late autumn. You can see some cows and horses grazing around. If you're lucky you might see some people driving peculiar motorcycles. Most people come to visit the volcano, but I'll definitely recommend staying to look around the national park area as well.

One of my favorite places I’ve visited during my month trip in Japan. Not too hard to make a day trip out of it from Kumamoto - just a bit pricey. Visiting the crater isn’t always a guarantee but there are still beautiful sceneries that is well worth the trip.

Worth spending your time, hiking there.
It was fun. One would better prepare food and drink ready to get and hike there. We saw some wild deer there too. It was awesome.
