Narayanapuram is one of the twelve most important surviving Kalinga-era historic sites in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Among these is the Nilakateswara – also spelled Neelakanteshvara or Nilakantheshwara – temple at Narayanapuram. The inscriptions here confirm that the temples here are from the 9th and 10th centuries, in the same style as those found in 7th and 8th century in this region.

This is a complex of temples, with a tapestry of architecture that helps one compare and admire the Nagara latina style, Rekha deul style, Valabhi deul style, and Kalinga style at one place. The Hindu artwork in these temples is predominantly Kalinga style that is minimalist, expressive and complete. Somewhat eroded, this site nevertheless illustrates the exceptional artwork found in Andhra-Odisha region, something that makes this region famous for its many historical landmarks. All temples here build upon the square and circle principle at the heart of Hindu and Jain architecture, those found in early vastu sastra texts in Sanskrit and regional languages.

This large complex is dedicated to Shiva and reverentially includes an abundance of Vishnu, Devi-Shakti and Vedic deities related artwork like the rest of major historic temples in India. Some of the impressive artwork here include those for Surya, Saraswati, Durga, Lakulisa, Ganga, Yamuna, Ganesha, Ardhanarisvara, Kartikeya and Harihara,

Nilakanthesvara temple is one of the most complete Kalinga-era monument that has survived – only one statue is missing from its niche. Thus, you can admire a nearly complete 10th century Hindu temple here, and if you combine the visit here with Mukhalingam, you can explore how Hindu arts evolved in this region over some 300 years (7th to 10th century).

Narayanapuram is a bit off the main modern highways in Andhra Pradesh, yet this site is worth a visit to admire the exceptional artist and architectural achievements of Telugu and Odiya speaking people in the 1st millennium.
