Sri Uma Markandeyeswara Swamy Temple is a famous and ancient Shiva temple located in Godavari Bund Road, near Pushkarghat, Rajahmundry town, Andhra Pradesh.
This temple was built in 10th Century A.D. by Eastern Chalukyas. Shri Raja Raja Narendra, Cholas and Reddy Rajas are the contributors to this temple.
According to the recitals, a Muni called Mrukhanada dedicated for Meditation with an object of getting children and Lord Siva gave Varam at the choice of Muni to select a Baby having no husband throughout her life or a Boy surviving 11 years for a sprit of devotion and pious personality. The Muni choosed a Boy at the instance of Lord Siva. Lord Siva gave varam accordingly.

The Boy, named ‘Markandaya’ having the knowledge of his short survival, dedicated his life for Tapasya, installed a Lingam at the place where the temple is now situates and worshipped the Lingam. On attaining the age of 11 years, Yamah tried to take his life but, Lord Shiva came to the rescue the Boy and gave varam of total survival of his life. The Boy completely dedicated his life for the worship of Lord Siva and reached Siva and Parvathi Ammavaru. This is the Historical back-ground. As the Idol (Lingam) and Ammavaru are stated to have installed by Muni Markandeya, the temple is popularly known as Sri Markendeyeswara Swamy Varu.

The Markandeya Temple is located in the town of Rajahmundry. Initially, it was believed that the ruins at the site of the temple were those of a mosque. However, archaeological surveys discovered that the ruins were that of a Shiva temple. So, in 1818, Gundu Sobhanadriswara Rao reconstructed the temple and it can be accessed from the Gunduvari Street, the same street where Gundu Sobhanadriswara Rao resided. According to legend, the temple is associated with Muni Mrukhanada. It is claimed that she prayed to Lord Shiva for a child. Pleased with her prayers, Lord Shiva appeared before her and asked her to choose between a child, who would survive for 11 years, and a husband. Muni Mrukhanada chose the former. She had a boy, who spent his whole like praying to Lord Shiva and even made a lingam and placed it inside the temple. When 11 years passed and the God of Death, Yamaraj came to take the boy, Lord Shiva intervened and blessed him with life.

Ancient, pleasant and can spiritually, devotionally , on the river bank of Godavari at Rajahmundry. Other important Gods are properly situated within the premises. One should have a darshan after a holy dip in Godavari.
