मन्दिर

भारतीय धर्मों (सनातन धर्म, जैन धर्म, बौद्ध धर्म, सिख धर्म आदि) हिन्दुओं के उपासनास्थल को मन्दिर कहते हैं। यह अराधना और पूजा-अर्चना के लिए निश्चित की हुई जगह या देवस्थान है। यानी जिस जगह किसी आराध्य देव के प्रति ध्यान या चिंतन किया जाए या वहां मूर्ति इत्यादि रखकर पूजा-अर्चना की जाए उसे मन्दिर कहते हैं। मन्दिर का शाब्दिक अर्थ 'घर' है। वस्तुतः सही शब्द 'देवमन्दिर', 'शिवमन्दिर', 'कालीमन्दिर' आदि हैं।

और मठ वह स्थान है जहां किसी सम्प्रदाय, धर्म या परंपरा विशेष में आस्था रखने वाले शिष्य आचार्य या धर्मगुरु अपने सम्प्रदाय के संरक्षण और संवर्द्धन के उद्देश्य से धर्म ग्रन्थों पर विचार विमर्श करते हैं या उनकी व्याख्या करते हैं जिससे उस सम्प्रदाय के मानने वालों का हित हो और उन्हें पता चल सके कि उनके धर्म में क्या है। उदाहरण के लिए बौद्ध विहारों की तुलना हिन्दू मठों या ईसाई मोनेस्ट्रीज़ से की जा सकती है। लेकिन 'मठ' शब्द का प्रयोग शंकराचार्य के काल यानी सातवीं या आठवीं शताब्दी से शुरु हुआ माना जाता है।

The spiritual principles symbolically represented in Hindu temples are given in the ancient Sanskrit texts of India (for example, Vedas and Upanishads), while their structural rules are described in various ancient Sanskrit treatises on architecture (Brhat Samhita, Vastu Sastras).[7][8]The layout, the motifs, the plan and the building process recite ancient rituals, geometric symbolisms, and reflect beliefs and values innate within various schools of Hinduism.[3] A Hindu temple is a spiritual destination for many Hindus, as well as landmarks around which ancient arts, community celebrations and economy have flourished.[9][10]

Hindu temples come in many styles, are situated in diverse locations, deploy different construction methods and are adapted to different deities and regional beliefs,[11] yet almost all of them share certain core ideas, symbolism and themes. They are found in South Asia particularly India and Nepal, in southeast Asian countries such as Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Vietnam, and islands of Indonesia and Malaysia,[12][13] and countries such as Canada, the Caribbean, Fiji, France, Guyana, Kenya, Mauritius, the Netherlands, South Africa, Suriname, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, the United Kingdom, the United States, and
