Govardhan Math (Shankaracharya Math)

Serene place. It is at a walking distance from the sea beach.
But due to multiple steps, it is quite difficult for elderly people with knee or joint problems to enter.
Having said that, the place is painted like new, neat and clean.
There are multiple temples inside.
A spiritual atmosphere to be liked by interested people. Overall, a good place to add to your Puri trip bucket list.

Purvamnaya Sri Govardhan Pitham or Govardhan Math is one of the four pithams established by the Adi guru Shankaracharya. This is located in walking distance from the Swargadwar sea beach. But few visitors or travelers come here. This place is the very oldest place in Puri. I recommend heavily to come here and feel this place to face to history. The head of the Matha is called Shankaracharya , the title derives from Adi Shankara. According to tradition this Matha was established in 13th to 15th century. Swami Sri Nischalananda Saraswati ji Maharaj is the current Shankaracharya in this Matha. He was born on 30th June 1943 in a village called Haripur Bakhshi Tol in the Madhubani district of Bihar.

Govardhan mutt was founded by Sankaracharya, it is one of the four mutt established by him. 4 mutts are stand for 4 vedas. This one is dedicated for rughvedha.

The best math I got to visit while I was in Puri. The temple has high energy vibes and the tour of the math showed how much knowledge there is to be gained which we ignored or not appreciate. There are idols of Jagganath, subhadra adn Balraj in great likeness to the ones in the Jagganath temple. Plus the Krishna idol made of Shaligram was the one I loved the most. We happened to enjoy the arti when we were there. The temple is closed in the afternoon till 4 pm I think. There is good collection of books and literature to read and buy. There are accommodations available for visitors. It also has hostel that boards the students in various fields like mathematics, science etc. Must visit. There is also a gaushala accross the street which has desi gais, taken care by attendants. Take some fruits or veggies for the cows and their calves if you wish.

Extremely beautiful and ecstatic experience I had after visiting this place. It is one of the four mathas established by Adi Shankaracharya known as Govardhan math very near from Swargdwar beach Road . One can also reach by walking from the main road hardly 200 m .It is a beautiful place with a devine temple of Ma Vimla Devi at it's center where u can feel the devine presence all around. After entering the main gate one will experience so much of calmness and purity that ur heart will get filled with the feeling satisfaction of visiting this place. Here there are two other temples as well, one of Shree Krishna Govind jee and the other of Mahaprabhu jagannath. Also there u will find the Guru Jee's who will guide u and explain about the matha and there procedures in details. They are extremely polite and explains every single thing with so much detail and precise that will make u feel worth visiting and last but not the least this matha is filled with photo capturing places and scenic views. Even there are a lot of hotels near the matha all around. Overall a must visit place.

It was totally like heavenly dream that to visit Govardhan Math,Puri. We met with Shankarcharya swami Nischalananda Saraswati Guru ji. We visited evening 7pm sangha, where he clearfies people's question regarding sanatan dharm, religion, nation, vedanta, upanishad etc. That listening and watching him face to face such a bliss moment.

One must visit this place when in Puri for the peaceful ambience around. This peetham also has a Veda paathashala where the young kids learn the holy Hindu scriptures. It's part of the four primary Peethas that Sri Adi Shankaracharya established- Sringeri, Joshimath, Puri and Dwaraka.

Jagadguru Shankaracharya is a title given to the heads of the mathas (monastic establishments) founded by Adi Shankaracharya, a prominent philosopher and theologian in Hinduism. Puri is one of the four mathas established by Adi Shankaracharya, and the head of this matha is known as the Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Puri. These spiritual leaders play a significant role in preserving and propagating the Advaita Vedanta philosophy.

It's one of four mutts which was formed by Adi sankaracharya, it's an amazing place to visit, very calm, clean and nicely maintained. They have rooms as well, which you have to book in advance and come. It's very near to the Puri Beach and Market.

Govardhan Peetham is established by Sri Shankaracharya. This is one of the 4 Mathas established by him. This is the most peaceful place in entire Puri. Excellent devine place to visit in Puri. Walkable distance from Puri beach. Have a blissful evening here after visiting puri beach.

This is a sacred place. The ambience is calm and quiet and peaceful. The place is approximately 5 minutes walk from Swargadwar.

I keep visiting the math during chaturmas, since my Gurudev stays in the math for a few months and give lessons on shastras. Pre booking is suggested a few days before the visit.

A nice place for spiritual and religious tourism. It is the place of Shankaracharya ji. Anyone can get blessings from him.

Devine place to visit. This is rigveda peetha established by Sri Aadi Shankaracharya swamiji. Food is available for prior booking of one day. Accommodation is also available if rooms are empty. Around 3 km away from Puri Jagannatha temple. You can find autos to travel locally. But morning walks are added value if you are a good Walker.

At one level it is really very surprising to see so few ratings and reviews for one of the most prominent centers of Hinduism / Sanatana Dharma. The Govardhan Mutt was one of the four centers established by Adi Shankaracharya 1200 years ago for the propagation of Sanatana Dharma. It is definitely sad to see the center representing the East of the country is hardly known.
But then if you visit the place you realise why: the government seems to have made no arrangements to support this place. To the extent that few auto drivers weren't even aware of this place. The Mutt is hard to reach and has to be approached via narrow bylanes. I wonder if this is a test of God on the level of our devotion - at least that is how devotees should see it as.
Nonetheless, devotees all around the country should make the change by visiting this peaceful place. By giving donations to maintain the place and towards Godan. The Jagadguru is doing his part in teaching and spreading the knowledge of Vedanta. May all devotees also do their part.
The Mutt is very close to the Jagannath Puri temple, so those who visit there should make it a point to visit this Shankaracharya Mutt also.
