A beautiful padal petra temple in panruti Tamil Nadu . One of eight Veerattaneswarar temple . Thiruvathigai, the temple was originally built by pallavas, and later developed by cholas and other kings who ruled this place, Raja Raja cholan who grown up from this place used to spend his young age in this Temple and his Tanjore big temple was built similar style. Appar who embraced Jain in his young returned to Hinduism by the grace of this shiva temple and started visiting other Shiva temples till his last days. This temple is 2 kms from panruti bus stop and 186 kms from Chennai, 86 kms from thiruvanamali and 286 kms from Bangalore.

Temple never to be missed. We should visit this temple atleast once in our life time. What an architecture! We would have never seen this type of architecture anywhere in the world. We might have seen some intricate and more beautiful architecture elsewhere; but this is different. There are more than 10000 children sculpture, but amazingly no two are similar. Very positive vibrations. If anyone has not visited this temple yet, pl visit and experience the divinity!!

This is one of the Ashta (8) Veerattanam temples dedicated to the destroyer form of Lord Shiva. At this temple in Thiruvadhigai, the Lord is believed to have destroyed the 3 cities of Tripura, hence earning the name Tripurantaka or Veerattaneswarar. Lord is in a lingam form, accompanied by Parvati as Thripurasundari.

This is a large temple complex, with 3 levels of gopuram, one smaller than the earlier one as we near the sanctum. There is a garden dedicated to the trees that are proxies to the Navagrahas (9 planets) and the 27 nakshatras (cosmic stars), just inside the first complex. There is a temple pond right next to this complex

As we enter the second complex, we are greeted by a large Nandi and can view the sanctum through a grilled window. On the outer praharam or corridor, we find sannithis/ shrines for Lord Vinayaga, Lord Subrahmanya, and Goddess Durgai (Rajadurgai) as well as Navagrahas and Kalabhairava

Inside the innermost sanctum, we will find the Maha Lingam for Lord Veerattaneswarar, along with Urchava Murthies (deities used in processions during festivals)

This temple is also popular among Shaivites as Appar or Thirunavukarasar converted to Hinduism from Jainism at this temple, after praying for release from a disease, based on his sister Thilagavathi's suggestion. Appar's sister was associated with the temple and she has a separate shrine here as does Appar

This temple is situated 2 Kms from Panruti and there is a Sri Saranarayana temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who provided the arrow to destroy the 3 cities/ demons of Tripura also nearby. Google Maps driving guidance is accurate, so just follow the directions to reach this temple

One of the saptha vidanga sthalam.
Where (rudran - lord shiva) Samhaara moorthy is present.

The ancient architecture, sculptures, and the feel you get in the temple is truly devine.

One of the must visit temples for all the people who follow sanatana dharmam.

As a shaiva you will surely have this temple in your sapthavidanga sthalam list.

Food is available near the temple.
Mostly petty shops near the temple.

Car parking is available.

Pooja items also available at the entrance.

A very big cow shelter is also present in the temple so if you want to feed any greens to the cows thats most welcome.

Om namah shivaya.

Considering the temple as one of the prides of our panruti. Very old and ancient temple. The colour of stones and architecture completely reveals how old it must be . Even we have a buddha statue in a sivan temple revealing the story of Buddhism and saivism prevelaed in the ancient days. The presiding god is lord siva in the name of veerataneswarar (meaning strong /bold /powerful)It is believed that there are 8 incidents where the sivan has showed his veeram in ancient history, of which one such incident has happened here. (அட்ட வீராட்டன தலங்களில் ஒன்று). The presiding deity is lord shiva and periyanayagi is the goddess . Usually we can see in most sivan temple, goddess sanctum will be to the left of the god. But here it's an inverse...Goddess temple will be to the right of god . Hence symbolising the marriage ritual . Even in the main sanctum (moolavar) behind the lingam, on the walls we have a huge sculpture of sivan and parvathi as couple in the married form. Thirunavukkarasar who lived his most days here wanted to see the marriage of god and goddess and wanted them together to be seen. Hence the sculpture behind the lingam. Usually the sanctum is very dark and only agal lamps are lit and the sculpture is rarely seen. During pradhosham and aaru kaala poojai times the priest goes behind the lingam with the aarathi and shows it to the sculpture behind the lingam and it's a divine feeling to witness . And not to be missed if u have any marriage hurdles .

This is a wonderful place which would interest those who admire sculptures a lot..
The entrance itself contains a lot of dance poses . This is one of the three places only where lord Shiva is in marriage fashion (thirumana kolam).. (other two are Kanchipuram and vetharanyam) .
The god at this place is known for curing diseases. The gopuram is full of rich sculptures.

It was after this Saint Thirunavukarasar converted to Saivate.
The vimanam of the garba graha look very like the one of Thanjavur big temple.
Lord Shiva cures all kinds of stomach problems. One who consume Soola theertham and worship here will get relieved of all diseases.
Lord Mahavishnu, Lord Brahma, Lord Indra, pandavas,Vayu ,Varuna, Yama and Saptarishis worshipped here.
Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi can be seen in marriage scene behind the moolavar.
