Very beautiful step well temple. Actually both are separate, the temple and the step well.

The temple has wonderfully carved stones inside and outside.

The step well although don't have have any statues like some other step wells.

The area is will maintained and good amount of gardening has been done around the structure.

On special occasions you can also see the light and laser show hosted here.

There is a museum too, which probably has the artifacts from the temple itself.

Parking: Parking is available at a minimal cost.

Tickets: If I remember correctly it was Rs. 40 per person.

Surya Mandir - Modhera

The Sun Temple of Modhera, the most famous after the Sun Temple of Konark, is a fine example of sculpture architecture compared to other temples in Gujarat. Built in the 11th century AD, this temple located in Modhera is situated on the left bank of Pushpavati river which meets Rupen river in Bahucharaji taluka of Mehsana district, 30 km from Patan city.

During the reign of Solanki king Bhimdev-I (1022-1063 CE)

This temple is built on an excellent Jagati, facing east. In the Skandha Purana

This place is mentioned as 'Bhaskarkshetra'. Temple complex

It is a combination of three separate sections. i.e. womb with circumambulation-

House. Sabhamandapa or dance hall with garbhamandapa and archway. In front of the pylon is a large rectangular tank measuring 175' X 120' feet, decorated with a number of miniature temples. Which is popularly known as 'Ramkund' among local people. Steps are built all around to descend into the pond. There are about 108 small temples in Kund. Which is decorated with idols of different deities like Ganesha, Seshashayi Vishnu, Nataraj and Mother Shitla.

The sanctum sanctorum is constructed of beautiful elegant tall pillars with decorative arched arches. The outer walls of the sanctum sanctorum, the twelve suns depicted in the windows, garlanded idols of the eight gates, various forms of Gauri, dancing nymphs, musicians etc.

The pillared octagonal auditorium has entrance arches. Sculptures are carved on the top of the pillars from all around. Various forms of deities are exquisitely carved on the outer walls. There are scenes depicted in the Ramayana and Mahabharata on the inner walls.

In front of the Sabhamandap is the Gudhmandap and the sanctum sanctorum. Where twelve idols of Lord Surya are carved. There is a gap between the goodhamandap and the sanctum sanctorum. There is no idol in the sanctum sanctorum. Brahma, Seshashayi Vishnu, various avatars of Vishnu like Varaha, Trivikrama, Narasimha Shivaya, Uma-Maheswara, dancing Ganesha and Durga are carved. Apart from the idols of various gods and goddesses on the outer walls of the temple, there are sculptures of eight gatekeepers in the main directions, dancing nymphs, flute players and Gandhavas.

One of the most impressive features of the temple is its unique design, with intricate stone carvings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology and various celestial bodies. The main shrine is designed in such a way that during the equinoxes, the first rays of the sun fall directly on the idol of the Sun God, creating a breathtaking visual spectacle.

Located on the Tropic of Cancer, this is one of (i believe) three Sun Temples in India, the most famous one being the monument in Konark. Like most other Hindu temples from that time period, this one too was destroyed by invaders. The temple has been somewhat restored and what we get to see now will make us wonder how much more beautiful the temple would have been when whole. There are some erotic sculptures though I have not included any in my photos.

Awesome place. Be there if you will arrive at day time and wait for the light and sound show which is included in your tickets. Worth to watch.. i waited around 6 hours for the show. If yor are travelling alone make sure watch the first show and leave as it would be very difficulty in finding the buses.
