In Malayalam "Kavu" signifies the temple for goddess. It is believed to be 1 of the most powerful temples in the world. From my childhood I have never missed a visit to this temple for its rich heritage , serenity & peace we receive when we enter. More than that the place talks about the power of woman/mother.
It is believed that an army of women headed by Chittur Amma & sister Pazhayanur Kavu went to the battle fighting against the powerful evil king Kongan when the husbands ran away leaving their children.

Will write more.

Chittur Kavu is an ancient temple located in Chittur-Tathamangalam municipality. 'Kavu' is an Adobe or Temple where the cosmic energy is stored in the form divine figure or deity. The deity in this temple called 'Chittur Amma' or 'Devi' is considered to be a savoir of protecting the native people of Chittur from negative elementals. The story of the temple, goes back to over centuries, where the king 'Kongan' came to attack peaceful yet prosperous 'Chittur Desam', and the locals resorted to the goddess for protection. The goddess in the form 'Chittur Amma' took the sword and fought and abolished the mighty Kongan and his army. The goddess after victory, returned and stayed at the place where the temple is located currently. The devotees, even today, resort to goddess for protection. 'Chittur Amma' continues to bless those who seek her even today. Every year 'Kongan Pada' festival is celebrated in the remembereance of the event of war between goddess and king Kongan.

Chittur Kavu Devi Temple, located in Chittur Village, is an old temple dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali and is located 6 km from Palakkad Train Station.

A 6-foot-tall Daruvigraham stands in the temple and is facing east. At this temple, the Poojas are performed by the Nair priests. The temple is only open on Tuesdays and Fridays during regular business hours. The Navarathri festival, all 31 days of the Malayalam month of Karkitakam (July/August), and the 41 days known as Mandalam (November/December) see it open for 9 days, though.

This temple hosts the big event of historical significance known as Konganpada. Every year, on the first Monday following the dark lunar night of Kumbham (February–March), this unusual event is conducted to honour the victory of the Nairs of Chittur over the militia of Konganadu (Coimbatore) under the command of the Chola King Rajadhi Raja.
