Primarily a krishnan temple, but kannaki is also worshipped as a bagavathi here.

The valiya vilaku vela is a once in a lifetime experience.
Unlike other temples where the vedikettu is just coloured chinese fireworks and dynamites, this temple features a show of KAMBAM KOLUTHAL. Here the gunpowder is filled in bamboo stems and arranged neatly on tall teakwod logs, such that the bamboo stems spin on an axis spreading the embers around.

One of the major temples in Palakkad. Here the epitome is worshipped as goddess. Once in every three year we celebrate festival. People from all the surrounding gather to watch the most Special and famous ceremony of - Kambam Kathikkal (കമ്പം കത്തിക്കൽ) - early morning the very next day of Veliyavela. The temple has a big and spacious hall for conducting festival related programs. It's noticeable from a moving vehicle and has excellent parking area.

Dedicated to Goddess Karnaki, who finds mention in the Tamil epic Silapathikaram as a vengeful wife and a legendary woman, the Vadakkanthara Thirupuraikkal Bhagavathy Temple is the only temple in Kerala that celebrates the goddess in her complete idolic form. Apart from its religious reverence, the Temple is known for its sprawling architecture exemplifying the beautiful traditional Kerala architecture.

The Temple still practises all the formal traditional worship practices in conformity with age-old prescriptions. In honour of the deity, an elephant perambulation/procession around the sanctum sanctorum with an accompanying traditional music troupe of nadaswaram and drums and trumpets is done in a laboured detailed ritual which evokes intense devotion in the participants. Donations of money or lit lamps or flowers are taken as offerings to the deity, all at devotees' discretion and as voluntary contribution only.
The whole ceremony and the devotees intense involvement in it without any distractionary behaviour throughout made it a really profound experience which was as it should be and as we wished it to be. The preservation of age-old traditions in this era of trivialisation of these religious functions was indeed a welcome experience for us.
