Thiruvallam Sree Parasurama Swami Temple is one of the most ancient temples It is the only temple in Kerala that is dedicated to Lord Parasurama its a holy place for devotees & site for ancestor worship. The temple is famous for rituals like pithrubali , thilahomam & after death ceremonies for ancestors, it is here that people fast and offer prayers for the souls of the departed. It has a serene and peaceful atmosphere of divinity.

According to the Hindu faith, it’s only through balitharpan that the dead attain moksha (liberation of the soul). The temple offers devotees the chance to perform balitharpan every day.The place is never quiet as a sea of devotees come here daily. It is believed that if the balitharpan is done in the presence of Parasurama, the souls will definitely be freed of their wordly sins.

Karkidaka Vavu is the most solemn day & important ritual at the temple, where in devotees swarm the place in the hope of freeing their beloved dead from the bondage of this world. The balitharpan is on the eve of the new moon day of Karkidaka (July-August). Thousands of devotees converge at the temple on this day to pay homage to the dead. Special prayers are offered and people return comforted in the belief that their dear ones are now in total unison with the Maker.

This place has no much instructions written, and hence for Keralites coming from outside Kerala or people having no knowledge about the process can be a little unwelcoming! .Now to the process & info…

Bali is done on different days, there is 41 day bali, Maasa Bali (Monthly) & Aandu Bali (Yearly). …
1. Try and reach the temple before 6 Am with all the people who are offering the Bali.
2. Tickets can be picked up from the counter either the day before evening or the same day when you reach (Remember, the queue can get very long on some days).
3. At the entrance on the left-hand side there is a shop, where you need to tell the details of the departed soul and they will give you the necessary things.
4. You also should be dressed in a white mundu and have a thorth (white towel) with you. During the process of Bali, they will ask you to take a string from the Thorth( white towel) hence the thorth.
5. With all this, you then enter the temple and take right.
6. While there is nothing written anywhere, you can ask people and they will generally show you where to hand over the receipt. Depending on where it is free, you will be allocated a space.
7. There will be kindi's (vessel) placed in the temple, take that fill water and keep it with you.
8. When they call your departed soul's name, go and occupy the place designated.
9. Clear instructions will be given for the process that to be followed !
10. Post all process, you (along with all the others) offer the pindams (it may vary from 2 to many depending on people offering Bali,) to the 9 sacrificial stones which is kept outside the entrance of the temple. Devotees believe that the dead take the form of crows and clean the leaves of all the food. You will then offer the rest to the river. Wash and come back to the place you offered Bali.
11. Go back to one of the halls adjoining the area where you offered the Bali and they will give you the receipt, basmam, flowers and if you had aalroopam back to you.
12. Take that and now go inside the temple and you will find priests offering pooja on left hand side, give that to them and they will do the needful. If you have an alroopam, he will do pooja and give back to you and you will have to go and give it at parasuraman sannithi. Pray & take prasadam from there also (pushpanjali types) and it’s done!

Here also even the Devotees can ask for a thilahoma, a ritual solely for ancestors who died unnaturally, and then have a darshan of the Lord.
Parking facilities available but it can be very difficult during early morning rush hours & special occasions!

Oldest and only temple in Asia dedicated to Lord Parasuramar.
Balitharpanam is one of the important rituals here.
They are doing this ritual only from 6 am to 10am. First day, I went by 10.30 am, they said already closed. So, went the next day earlier.
Very crowded on no moon days. So plan accordingly.
It could have been better if some instructions are displayed in English..

Rituals were performed well, what I felt was that the temple staffs were not guiding the devotees in a proper manner,it will be tough for a first time visitor to understand things and systems there,so my humble request for the temple staffs is to guide the devotees and answer their queries timely and effectively.I reached there early in the morning and have to ask so many staffs about the temple procedure and I was not able to complete my rituals as per planned time and have to wait there so long.

A place where our lovely people who were close to our heart are remembered in witness of Lord Parasuram. Younger generations can definitely improve their positions by this thanks giving ceremony. A temple one cannot forget in our life time. Let us open many more temples across the nation to keep our rich traditions alive

A Spectacular ancient temple
This temple is the centre and soul of the city. The ancient temple has inscriptions for centuries. It has recently been made very famous when they found gold worth over $20 billion-- just the value of the gold and gems and does not include the antique value of the jewels.

The temple administration, as all temples in Kerala, require all visitors to be dressed in traditional Indian clothes. Devotees who visit must also be Hindus. I have seen or taken foreigners dressed in Indian clothes who desire to visit the temple as a devotee and not as a tourist.

The outer prakara (corridor) has some very interesting sculptures ranging from scenes from Puranas, Bhakthi subjects, and very explicit sex scenes as well. The inner sanctum is a truly divine experience with the Lord lying down in his cosmic sleep. He is seen through three doors as the form is enormous and imposing. And, he is spectacular making you want to go back over and over again.

The one and only Parashuraman temple in Kerala, who is the 6th avatar among the Dasavathara.
It is very close to the highway between trivandrum and Kovalam.
It has been protected by the Kerala government as the oldest temple monument structure.
A very energetic and positive vibe can be felt when reached here.
