रायसेन किला 11वी शताब्दी के आस पास हिन्दू राजाओं के द्वारा बनाया गया देश के सबसे बड़े किलों में शुमार किया जाता है। इस महल पर 14 बार अलग अलग आक्रमणकारियों ने हमला किया फिर भी ये शान से खड़ा रहा, वैसे तो हिन्दू किला / महल होने की वजह से यहाँ कई मंदिरों के अवशेष दिखते हैं परंतु सोमेश्वर महादेव मंदिर या पमैया टैम्पल पूरी तरह संरक्षित है जिसमें अभी भी पूजा अर्चना की जाती है, पुरातत्व विभाग के अधीन होने के कारण पहले मंदिर को बंद कर दिया गया था परंतु स्थानीय निवासियों के आग्रह पर 1974 में पुनः इसको खोला गया और तत्कालीन मुख्यमंत्री द्वरा शिवलिंग की स्थापना की गयी और तब से यहाँ हर शिवरात्रि पर विशाल मेला लगता है और अनेक अन्य अवसरों पर भजन कीर्तन का आयोजन किया जाता है।
