More than 120 million years ago, the sea was. very near (which about 100 k.m now ) to Sathanur. During this period the sea abounded in a variety of marine animals along with trees were buried by sand and clay brought down by the rivers and the trees. Along with them some of the trees were buried after transport by flooded streams and were petrified in course of time. The large trunk of petrified tree, which can be seen here, lies within the Trichirappalli group of rocks of about 10 million years ago. The petrified tree trunk at Sathanur measures over 18 meters in length.  Similar fossil trees measuring a few meters in length are found along the stream sections near Varagur, Anaipadi, Alundalipur and Saradamangalam. An educational center, including a museum and a children’s park exists at the National Fossil Wood Park at Sathanur. The Education Center  constructed as part of the project  includes four halls with illustrations on the solar system, origin of earth, big bang theory, origin of life and evolution and the petrified tree. Fossils collected in the region have been displayed in the museum

UNBIASED REVIEW....A colleague of my office took me to this fossil wood park,perambalur...Unprepared plan...But was astonished to see such a park...One of a rare one ever visited... Credit to M.S KRISHNAN archeology department for having found this wonder...

PROS..😃

1. YOU are about to witness tree turned to stone ..Which is 12 crore years old and ancient sea creatures imprints in rock

2. Decent neat and tidy...

3. Open time approx 9 a.m to 6 p.m

4.able to know about history that sea was in perambalur 12 crore years back

CONS...😑

1. such monument should be advertised and considered a notional treasue.and funds should be allocated to improve.

.2. seating table is limited

Read about info about park in pictures below

EXPERIENCE MAY VARY FROM PERSON TO PERSON AND TIME TO TIME...

Its an amazing place for those who love the old history and geological sites . The place has many fossilized trees , these were old than a crore year . On the way you can find karai badlands its an evidence that the palce was sea in old time . These trees belongs to cretacous period and type of conifer tree which is non flowering trees. And the place also has some fossils inside the room . The place were so neat . But there is no availability of water or any snack spot near that . Those who are planning take those amenities with you

Must to visit place to explore the fossil wood stone park. Remaining of trees and animals and other living beings which got converted to fossils are available in stone form. Road is under construction so be cautious. Located next to perambalur on NH45 road.

Well maintained place. TN government has arranged staffs to guide people those who visit this place by explaining them the big bang concepts and other details very clearly in Tamil. I could able to understand very clearly than Brila planitorium in Trichy/Chennai. Nice initiative. The entry ticket is just 5 rs. Please take your kids here, they will be wondering how universe created. This place will definitely take you to ancient period if you able to understand the value of the place you stand on. Lake side road and Landmark needs to be improved. I will take my kid here definitely when they reach 5 yrs of age.

This park is located approximately one kilometer north of Sathanur village. There used to be a sandy, muddy road and reaching the park used to be a very daunting task.

The nearest airport is at Trichy, while the nearest railway station is at Ariyalur. Buses also run regularly from the new Perambalurbus-stand to the Sathanur bus stop. Visitors can then walk or take bicycle to reach the park.

The National Geological Monument in Sathannur, Perambalur dist has been converted into a Fossil Wood Geopark. The State Govt of Tamil Nadu and the local Panchayat developed the place with a Rest house, small museum for the visitors. The park contains large trunks of petrified trees of Middle Cretaceous age (Aptian; about 120 million years). The trees belong to conifers (non-flowering) that dominated the land vegetation during the period. The fossilised tree trunk at Sattanur measures over 18 m in length.
The fossilized tree trunks of Sathannur are a set of fossilized tree trunks discovered in the in 1940 by Dr.M.S.Krishnan. These fossilized tree trunks are believed to be over 120 million years old and are considered to be evidence of the presence of a sea in the middle of the present-day Tamil Nadu during the time. Geological study shows that more than 120Ma ago, the sea (which lies today about 100Km East of Sathannur) had transgressed as far as 8 to 10 Km West of Sathannur. During this period, the sea abounded in a variety of marine animals similar to those found in the present day sea. These animals, after death, sank to the bottom and were buried by sands and clays brought down by the rivers. Along with them some of the trees which flourished on the seacoast or near shore were also buried after transport by flooded streams and were petrified in course of time. The large trunk of petrified tree, which can be seen here, lies within the Trichinopoly group of rocks of about 100Ma ago. This tree shows the presence of Conifers (The non flowering plants) that dominated the land vegetation prior to the advent of Angiosperms (the flowering plants of the present of day). Similar fossil trees measuring a few meters in length are found along the stream sections near Varagur, Anaipadi, Alundalipur and Saradamangalam.
Visited by tourists who are aware by consulting the Tourist map of Tamil Nadu as the park has a notable mark in the state tourist map.
It is situated about 700m N of the Sathannur village and can be approached through NH 45 [connecting Chennai with Tiruchchirapalli] up to Siruvachchur village and then to the Geopark location through an unmetalled road for a distance of 14km eastward.

Fossilised trees are wonders of nature. The park is very small and houses one big fossilised tree and two small trees from Villupuram. It also has a few rocks excavated from near by places. There is one watchman who takes of the park.
Rare and unknown place in Tamil Nadu.

I, Ka.Vezhavendhan, visited that place with my Friends, Advocate Manokaran, Banker Rethinam and Chandrasamy, on 20.04.2014.
It is great and unforgettable opportunity to see the valuable things. This is an one more evidence which proves the occurrence of Tsunami in the very olden periods. It is one among the best Archaeological site which should be visited and observed by the students, research fellows, scholars etc.
We admire the Scholar Dr.Krishnan who discover the object in 1940.
Thanks.
