The University of Jammu, is one of top University of India. It accredited as 'A+' grade University by National Assessment & Accreditation Council of India, came into existence in 1969 vide Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act 1969 following bifurcation of the erstwhile University of Jammu and Kashmir (established in 1948).
The University of Jammu has recently been awarded 51 st rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework conducted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. It has also been granted autonomy by the University Grants Commission for maintaining high academic standards and in terms of the graded autonomy, the University of Jammu has been recognized category-I university.
Apart from its main new campus at Bahu Wali Rakh, old campus and Poonch House in Jammu, the University has eleven other campuses.

The university is currently located on the banks of the Tawi River. The university has set up seven off-site campuses at Bhaderwah, Kishtwar, Poonch, Reasi, Ramnagar, Kathua and Udhampur. The university is the first university in India to receive the ISO-9001 certification.[4] The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs.[5] It also affiliates and recognizes colleges.

The main campus of Jammu University is situated at Baba Saheb Ambedkar Road in Jammu at an altitude of 1030 ft above sea level. The main campus of the university houses the teaching departments, health centre, guest house, post office, Jammu & Kashmir Bank, bookshop, hostels, cafeteria and canteens and many other facilities. The second campus of the university (the old campus) is spread over 10.5 acres which is located at a distance of 4 km from the main campus and currently has residential quarters for teaching and non-teaching employees and hostel for boys.

The governor of the J&K State is the chancellor, and the chief minister is the pro-chancellor of the university. The university has 36 departments and 157 affiliated colleges, awarding degrees in more than 50 programmes at the postgraduate and undergraduate level.

University of Jammu is a reputed education institution of J&K, Jammu University professors are very experienced and highly qualified but its Examination checking and evaluation process is always a mess and headache for students, Re-appear and backlog answers sheets are never checked properly.
Controller examination should ensure proper checking of answer sheets.

UIET Kathua campus is an University of Jammu constituent college. It's only Government College in J&K that provides B.Tech degree in Civil and Computer science & engineering. Campus has good infrastructure and environment as well. The administrative staff is very supportive and knowledgeable.

Dhanvantri Library

The Dhanvantri Library, the Central Library of the University, is a 3 storied building having an area of 60,000 sq.ft. It offers about 5 lakh books, journals, and 250 current periodicals, etc. on a variety of subjects which caters to the needs of the students, teacher, and researchers. The library has large reading halls which can easily accommodate about 500 users. Most of the library have been computerized. A special technology, RIFD technology, is used for security purpose in the library.[12]

Departmental Libraries

Almost all departments run their own Departmental libraries. These libraries provide a wide spectrum of Journals in addition to books to the students.

Health Centre

A First Aid Centre was initially established in the premises of the boys' hostels of the University managed by a part-time medical assistant. Later, the First Aid Centre was upgraded to a full-fledged Health Centre in the early seventies to provide medical aid benefits to the University

One of the most green parts of the city Jammu. This campus was earlier known as a 'rakh' or the reserved forest. It was in 1979 that the first building, the Law Block and the Bio-Sciences block were constructed and in a decade or so, almost all the departments and the administrative block started operating from here. One peculiar feature of the University is its cactus garden which has some of the rare cactus plants.
