Washerwomen Monument

We found the details about this event online, and it's a shame there's not much information on the place.

A beautiful, yet tragic monument, the washerwomen of Preko (Ugljan) who died in a sea accident during a storm. All their names are written on the walls ranging from (if I remember correctly) 16 years to 80 years old.

They were hardworking women who washed the clothes for elites in Zadar to earn for their living. Unfortunately, a storm struck their ship and many of them died. This is why there's this fantastic monument.

You can see all their names and ages and around the main statue are "walled illustrations" of the events.

2 novembre 1891: naufraga, per il forte vento e per il mare in tempesta, una barca a vela partita da Zara e quasi arrivata a Preko. Muoiono 16 lavandaie che avevano appena consegnato alle ricche famiglie di Zara il bucato lavato e stirato. Le più giovani avevano 19 anni, la più anziana 75 anni. Ora sono ricordate con questo monumento che con alcuni quadri scolpiti ricorda la terribile tragedia. Una preghiera per loro.

It is very nice statue but when i was there it was dirty place that haven't seen cleaning in a long while.

Schönes Denkmal, aber leider ist der Teich voller Algen. Hier scheint sich keiner um die Pflege zu kümmern.
