El hospital fue complice. ENGLISH: While vacationing, a host named Caroline Marcel recommended "Medical Assistant Services" (also "Call The Doctor") for medical assistance. Unbeknownst to us, this service was run by her husband, Dr. Oscar Asturias. When my girlfriend needed medical care, she was admitted to Hospital Privado Hermano Pedro. After treatment, the hospital bill amounted to 4000 Quetzales (USD$500). However, despite having asked for (and having been denied) the price upfront, Dr. Asturias demanded an additional 9000 Quetzales (over USD$1,100), initially without a bill, far exceeding average private medical costs in Guatemala. When questioned, Dr. Asturias turned aggressive and evasive, and my girlfriend was essentially held hostage in the hospital, with the IV in her arm serving as a restraint, and Dr. Asturias saying she would be held with it until he was paid. Suspicions grew when the host, Caroline, disconnected from a WhatsApp group meant for her assistance, and the link between her and Dr. Asturias became clear. My efforts to resolve the situation were continually blocked by Dr. Asturias and his associates, even involving threats over our belongings left at Caroline's residence, which were left on the street, as well as threats about blocking her exit from Guatemala. The traumatic experience left her with lasting emotional distress. It was later discovered that Dr. Asturias may have been scamming tourists this way for years.
