The Akropong School for the Blind was officially opened in 1945. The school was the first for the blind in West Africa. The school was started by a Scottish missionary of the Presbyterian mission. Fredrick D. Harker started the school in 1936 with two pupils, Benhandt Ofori Addo and Isaac Ofori Addo both first cousins. The school has a current population of 370 pupils, with 49 graduate teachers among these are post graduate teachers. The biggest institution for the blind in Ghana. The school runs a basic educational system, rehabilitation centre, craft and music unit.
