These guitars are outstanding. I bought one guitar from Gerónimo Mateos and the sound was so moving I ordered a second one immediately. Everything has changed. I don't think one can find better value for money for a hand made artisan guitar. Don't hesitate, ask them to build you an Auditorio model asap. This workshop is top level.

I have a Monmartre D hole model, which looks fantastic and plays lovely, it is loud and bright, Frederico was very helpful with advice and help throughout, the process, he kept me updated of progress with photos, and the guitar was finished and delivered ahead of time. I am very pleased and would recommend the company and the guitars.

I cannot recommend Geronimo and Federico highly enough. I ordered their Segovia model as my first serious classical guitar in November last year after doing some internet research and coming across John Warren's article in Classical Guitar Magazine. I was a little reluctant to buy a hand made guitar without trying it first but the price was significantly cheaper than the price luthiers in the UK would charge for a similar instrument. Federico was in touch all the way and I looked forward to the day when my guitar did arrive. It duly did back in February but was destroyed by UPS delivery. Federico was really good as he knew how upset I was. He got started on making me a new one immediately and it arrived yesterday. I was really happily surprised to see he has given me the higher spec Aranjuez guitar instead of the Segovia which is their penultimate quality classical before their x braced auditorium model. Any regrets about not trying before buying faded as soon as I tuned up and played. It Is a solid spruce top, solid indian rosewood sides and Bouchet style 7 strut fan bracing with a natural oil finish. Even in new state the sound is powerful, complex and full with a lovely bell like quality to the trebles and a good substantial bass. The guitar is also set up perfectly as per my instructions (full sound but easy to play for an intermediate player) with Saverez High Tension strings and not too high an action, though I have the option of raising this in time as the neck has a truss rod. In short a glorious guitar and a committed, father and son team with old school attitude to craftmanship and customer service. I am already saving for a steel string Tennessee modeland look forward to meeting them personally soon at their Madrid workshop sometime soon.

I bought a Django model guitar this summer and it is a phenomenal instrument!! Loud, resonant and alive with a wonderful tone and playability! Stunning! The support I received from Federico was fantastic too, really going the extra mile to help set the guitar up perfectly for my needs. Couldn’t rate more highly!

I just received in Brazil (Santa Maria) a Model Sète Guitar made by Federico and Geronimo Mateos. It is an amazing Guitar with a strong sound identity and soul. The construction of the Guitar is simply perfect and beautiful. The playability is awesome. I'm already dreaming with a Jazz Model... Thanks for the kind contact managed by Federico during 2020 !

I have just received two amazing instruments. The "Model Sète" and the "Jazz C". I split my time between two heavens with my two mistresses!
Thank you Féderico and Géronimo for your superb craftsmanship.
Add to that the amazing value, the ease of the ordering process, and the personable interactions with both of you gentlemen. I could not be happier! The sisters seem to be happy here as well. Aloha.

I was in Madrid for work and figured there would never be a better time to get a Classical Spanish Guitar than that. After looking at several luthiers in and around Madrid, I decided to reach out to Guitarras Geronimo Mateos. They were very accommodating about my wanting to visit the shop and see their process.

I met with Federico and he walked me through the woods they use, how the bracing affects the timbre, and a hundred other small details. While the workshop is small enough they don't have extra guitars in stock, we set up my order and walked through the process of shipping it to the US. I selected the wood, style, and finish I wanted for the guitar.

So far, everything has been smooth and easy. I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a great handmade guitar.

This father-son duo makes fabulous guitars, I'm a very happy customer. When I visited Madrid they also graciously gave me a tour of their workshop. If you love master-built guitars definitely check them out!

I bought the model Segovia a few years ago and I have been very happy with it. Although I play only occasionally, it’s a pleasure to take the guitar from its case, to look at its simple embellishments (the way I like it) and to know it will feel comfortable in my hands and sound better and better as years go by.

I couldn’t imagine a better experience in ordering a guitar and receiving it. Federico was incredibly communicative and accommodating throughout the whole build process and it took the amount of time that was estimated at the start of my order. He let me choose the fingerboard wood and add other small customizations that truly made my guitar feel personal and unique to me.

The guitar that I received came out perfect and you can really feel the handmade texture and quality of the guitar. The sound and playability is second to none — it would be hard to find a better guitar at this price point on the market, especially for a Django-style guitar (I ordered the Jazz B). I was absolutely blown away how the guitar came out and it’s price point is almost unbelievable for a guitar of this quality! Thank you Federico and Geronimo Mateos!

A very special Model Jazz B arrived at my house yesterday. It is a wonderful instrument. It has great projection and volume, its easy to hold and the neck is extraordinarily comfortable. It is a beauty to behold. The choices that were made in blending wood grains and color are organic and artistic. The walnut and ebony in particular are stunning. I requested a dark finish soundboard which blends beautifully with the bubinga veneers and the walnut neck and headstock. I am overjoyed and uplifted by this instrument, and having played for 60 years, I've owned quite a few guitars. This one is a keeper for sure! Apart from building excellent guitars, my girlfriend thinks Geronimo and Federico are very handsome. Its a good thing I live in the US and not Madrid, I fear my girl would be visiting the shop with some frequency and,.. and she doesn't even play! Haha

After visiting the Mateos workshop in Madrid, I bought a Toledo classical guitar with spruce top. It is everything I could've wanted in a hand made guitar. I can’t imagine playing on anything else now.

Each guitar made by Geronimo and Federico is done so with care and artistry. They really are dedicated to the craft of making beautiful, inspiring instruments of incredible quality and construction.

Visiting the Mateos workshop was also fantastic. Geronimo made me feel so welcome. He gave his time to talk through the guitar making processes, the different types of woods and materials, as well as what specifically I needed.

The whole process from when I first made contact to when I collected my guitar was wonderful. I can’t recommend Mateos guitars enough. Expert craftsmanship, wonderful family, and guitars that are well priced for such a level of quality.

I love my Django model manouche guitar! I wish I could have gone to Madrid to visit the workshop and meet the luthier, but Federico has been very good at keeping in touch by email, including sending pictures of the guitar at various stages of construction.
This is a genuine handmade guitar at an affordable price. Highly recommended.

Got in contact with Federico through e-mail asking if he could meet me Saturday at his workshop and he prompted answered. I went there, he was very nice with me, explaining how they did the guitar and the entire process. After that I bought a great Salamanca guitar, which first I asked him to deliver in my country but later changed the destination. Federico helped all the way!

Summing up, an AWESOME guitar, pretty and with an ASTONISHING SOUND, an affordable price and great customer service. The workshop is not in downtown, but that's the difference that's worth it! Also is quite near thr airport, I went straight from there.

Superb quality. Very friendly and honest business dealings. They charge a remarkably modest price for their instruments for a family with craftsmanship so well refined. They stand behind their product, as well and are always quick to respond to any question of up-keep, specs, and recommendation. I have been playing my Audrey model professionally every weekend for the last year and her warm and crisp tone continues to inspire me. They have killed my lust for other guitars!

My husband and I visited this father and son shop during our visit to Madrid. First, they make beautiful guitars that sound AHMAZING!! Second, they are super personable folks to deal with; they will talk to you about what you're looking for in a guitar and make sure you are paired with the best instrument for you (in English, French or Spanish). If you are looking for a unique and personal experience when investing the money for a handmade guitar, this is seriously the place. Money well spent and a truly fantastic experience; a memory for sure!
Quick Tip: We took an Uber out to their shop and then took the Metro back.

On my first visit to Spain and Portugal with my family, I was hoping to buy a classical guitar made in Spain. The sightseeing came first, and the day before my flight back home, I resolved to buy a guitar. There was a guitar shop selling classical guitar just 50 meters from my hotel, but I happened to read an article by the musician John Warren about his adventures of trying to buy an affordable guitar from the many luthiers in Madrid, ultimately buying a guitar from Geronimo Mateos.

So I called the number listed on Geronimo Mateos website, and Federico (Geronimo's son) answered. Although they typically build guitars only on order from a customer, they happened to have two guitars in stock, one "Escorial" and the other "Aranjuez" model. Federico, who speaks excellent English, invited me to visit the shop, which was quite a distance away from the hotel. The shop was a little hard to find, located very close to the airport, in an industrial complex, but Federico was there to greet me, a very affable young man, and soon I was playing the two guitars, which were really nice and quite loud (compared to my old guitar), with nice bass sound.

Although the Aranjuez model was priced a little higher than my budget, with a nice discount from Federico who also pointed out that I wouldn't have to pay Spanish tax on it, we settled on a price for this model. Apparently, I couldn't just pay for and walk out with the guitar - a "CITES" certificate was required, which meant we would have to go to the custom office at the airport. My wife wanted to do some last minute shopping in Madrid, so Federico was kind enough to agree to get the certificate and drop off the guitar to me at the airport the next day. On my way out, I was fortunate enough to meet his father, Geronimo, a kindly gentleman.

The next day, after I reached the airport, I called Federico, and he met me outside the departure terminal with my guitar! We shook hands and he wished me happiness playing my guitar and a safe journey. It's been only a week or so, but I am having fun playing my Mateos guitar. Overall, the experience of buying my guitar was fantastic. Truly very nice people and wonderful guitar.

SECOND GUITAR PURCHASE
(Custom design Flamenco based off the Emelia model)

I was so pleased with the craftsmanship and playability of my first guitar ordered (The Segovia) that I reached out to Federico to make me a custom build (based on his Emelia model).

I chose Cedar top and mahogany back and sides for this guitar. The design was to celebrate my 30th wedding anniversary. This purchase had some differences that make it truly desirable to all who play it and hear it played. Federico suggested I use the oil hand rubbed finish. This was a first for me - as I often choose the standard lacquer finish for my guitars. I was somewhat uncertain about the oil finish. However, I took Federico's suggestion.

Once again, impeccable. The tone was off the chart excellent - as if the guitar had already settled and opened after 20 years of playing. The moment i strummed the guitar - no regrets. I have let several people try the guitar in my music gigs. Each tome I get a resounding - "Wow! This guitar sounds incredible."

So for my 2nd purchase, I can emphatically say - zero regrets. 100% satisfaction once again. From the beginning of the build to the receiving of the guitar - it was a simple and meaningful purchase.

FIRST GUITAR PURCHASE
(The Segovia)

Thank you again for making the purchase of one of your instruments efficient and easy.

At first, I was hesitant to purchase an instrument without having a chance to get my hands on it and play it. After 40 years of playing guitar, I am rather picky when it comes to my choices.

I want to say a big "Thank you" for easing my hesitations of "buying before trying". You worked with me every step of the way. You allowed me to be part of the process. You went the extra mile and sent me photographs of the process. You answered every question I could come up with. You were always prompt to respond and never made me feel bad for asking so many questions. Even down to the details of handling international shipping - you made the purchase easy and I never had to worry.

This morning the guitar arrived! When I opened the package I was more than pleased. You went above and beyond. From the moment I unboxed the guitar, I had no regrets. Once I played it? Well, I would do it all over again. It was perfection. The attention to details. The building the guitar to my exact specifications - everything was done to perfection. I even measured all the key elements that mattered to me. Down to the millimeter - the were perfect. The tone, the playability, the aesthetics? All pleasing to the eye and satisfying to the ear.

Thank you again. Thank your dad for me. I am honored I came across your website and found someone in the business of making superior quality instruments. I highly recommend your business to anyone in the market for a superior and finely crafted instrument. I guarantee that you will have zero regret in your investment.

Thankful guitar enthusiast,

Mark

My wife and I recently spent some weeks in Spain, during which time I had the privilege to try playing several hand-made classical guitars in several shops throughout Spain. I had been aware of Guitarras Geronimo Mateos from reviews on the internet. For a few weeks I exchanged emails with Federico (Geronimo's son and the other luthier in the shop), ultimately arranging for a visit to his shop when we got to Madrid. Federico was very welcoming and truthful via the emails, answering several of my questions. When we finally did visit his shop, Federico was most generous and gracious with his time as we spent most of the morning with him. Upon playing the two completed Aranjuez model guitars he had at the shop, I fell in love with the cedar topped instrument. It just felt so much better than the other instruments I had previously tried. Its beautiful French Polish finish and the smell of real wood, and the workmanship, make this a piece of art. It is totally hand made by the father and son team in their shop. It has a rich tone (timbre) and seems to project this sound beautifully. The thin neck and set-up give the instrument a very comfortable feel. The tone is balanced throughout the high and low registers. A single note will continue to sustain as other parts of a piece are played. This is truly a concert grade instrument and it makes my other studio grade guitar sound flat by comparison. My guitar instructor (also a luthier) has now played the instrument and feels it is very well made, completely hand made, and very good value. I love this instrument! I also feel I have made a new friend in Federico. The morning spent in his shop and the purchase of this fine instrument was truly a highlight of our trip to Spain. A beautiful guitar, a beautiful shop, and beautiful people. Highly recommended. Bill Jones, May 9, 2018
