In the coastal Fanefjord Forest on the south-eastern Møn are 16 protected burial mounds of various sizes from the Bronze Age. None of the mounds have been the subject of archaeological research, so the dating to the Bronze Age (1,700 - 500 BC) is mainly based on the mounds' size and landscape location. Around the party and gathering place at the northern end of the forest, where you will also find the "Forest Pavilion", are 6 easily accessible and worth seeing burial mounds, of which especially the large mound on the east side of the area stands out. A new information board has also been set up here, which tells more about both the burial mounds and the history of the forest. The approx. The 230-hectare Fanefjord Forest is operated as a communal forest and is still owned mainly by residents of the parish. The forest was crown estate, but was redeemed in 1769 by the parish farmers. A memorial stone on top of the party site's large burial mound tells about this. Today, the forest is a coastal and self-rejuvenating mixed forest, but in the Bronze Age the area probably had more the character of a light-open overgrazed landscape with small, scattered and fenced fields, loose grazing livestock and scattered settlements with longhouses in smaller settlements. The burial mounds and scattered field boundaries from both the Bronze and Iron Ages in the forest floor are now the only visible traces from this time. The large burial mound with the memorial stone east of the forest pavilion is the largest of the remaining mounds in the forest. The mound must presumably have been laid out in the early Bronze Age and probably contains several burial sites and possibly also several construction phases. In the forest edge just south of the mound, an adjacent much lower mound can be seen, which is probably younger. It probably represents a high erection directly over urn or fire graves, which from the middle of the Bronze Age became the dominant form of burial in contrast to the older Bronze Age burials in hollowed-out oak coffins - the so-called bulk coffins. It is characteristic of older forests such as Fanefjord Skov that the variation in the preserved ancient monuments is far greater than on open land, where especially smaller mounds and facilities fell victim to the plow, long before the Nature Conservation Act of 1937 managed to protect them. Through a collaboration between the forest and Vordingborg Municipality, it has now also become possible to experience more of the other hills in the forest. In particular, the mounds around the Forest Pavilion and the large "Mortenshøj" are now nicely exposed to blurring tree vegetation. Mortenshøj is located right next to the forest road approx. 500 m. South of the Forest Pavilion and approx. 250 m. East of this are two more hills just north of the forest road. Furthermore, on the basis of completely new surface scans from aircraft all over Denmark, it has been shown that there are no further previously recognized mounds in the forest, but fortunately these are automatically protected by the law alone as a protected ancient monument.
