Gershøj Kirke

Gershøj Church, church in Kirke Hyllinge northwest of Roskilde. Gershøj Church's Romanesque choir and nave were built in the 12th century from rubble . The church had a flat wooden ceiling; around 1350 this was replaced by cross vaults. The west extension, tower and porch are three Gothic additions.
The baptismal font is Romanesque and made of granite. The pulpit is a Roskilde work from 1625. There are carved manors from the end of the 16th century with weapons and initials.
A notable detail is the latticed leprosy hole in the north side of the chancel. Here lepers are believed to have sat outside to hear the word of God and through the hole have received the sacrament.
Near the church is the sacred spring Sankt Laurentii spring, which well into the 19th century was a pilgrimage destination on Christmas Eve. Gershøj Church was in the Middle Ages dedicated to Skt. Laurentius .

Gershøj Kirke ligger 10 km nordvest for Roskilde. Kirken hører til Roskilde Stift.
Gershøj Kirke romanske kor og skib er bygget i 1100-tallet af frådsten. Den havde fladt træloft. Omkring 1400 bliver det flade træloft erstattet af krydshvælvinger. Vestforlængelse, tårn og våbenhus er tre gotiske tilbygninger.

En bemærkelsesværdig detalje er det tilgitrede spedalskhedshul i korets nordside. Her
menes syge og spedalske at have siddet udenfor, hvis de ville høre guds ord, samt have
fået nadveren rakt gennem dette hul.

Gershøj Kirke ligger med Roskilde Fjord i baggrunden. Nede ved fjorden ligger helligkilden Sankt Laurentii kilde, der langt op i 1800-tallet var mål for valfarter Skt. Hans aften. Gershøj Kirke var i middelalderen viet til Skt. Laurentius.
