Amazing place to visit and get an appreciation for what thousands of young German men had to endure. Make sure to visit the nearby German Navy memorial.

This German sub from 1942 is an absolute must to visit! You can easily visit it on the beach of Laboe, on the opposite harbour site of Kiel. Best to catch the direct ferry to go there, it's such a pleasure in fine weather. We previously visited the sowjet sub U434 in Hamburg. Even so the sowjet one was much bigger in size, more modern, build in 1976, it had a far more claustrophobic feeling. I know which one I'd rather be on 😁

An amazing experience. You can enter one end, walk through, and exit the other. Ticket costs a small fee, from the center against the street. Very interesting to see. Highly recommended.

German U-boat, later used by the Norwegian navy after WW2 and returned back to Germany in the 1970s.
Nice experience to walk through, see and imagine people living in it. Not very long and can be completed in an hour easily.

Nice submarine with interesting story. The sub is much smaller than the one in Hamburg, only one deck. 20-30 minutes to walk through. Periscope could be operational...

It’s an old submarine, that is open for a visit, as a museum. It’s not very big, but there are several sections. Its quite interesting to see how the submarine is designed, how people serve there, where they slept, ate, shower. Horrible to imagine, that in WW2 for many this kind of submarines became a grave.

I loved this Place - so cool to take a step back into History. So nice to see it preserved. Fun place to visit. The area is really beautiful. If you read book or watched a few U-Boot Movies most notable Das Boot. You can get a sense of how it must have been to live in one of these U-Boot. Especially under War times conditions. The where pretty sophisticated for the time - obviously U-Boots have come a long way since than. If you are in the area you should visit this Museum especially if you are a history buff. Also your visits helps in maintaining this Museum so others can enjoy it hopefully for many years to come. Worth a visit

My grandfather and his father before him designed U.S. submarines during and after WWII at PNSY. I am fascinated by them! Grandpa’s sub is on display back home.

This was a wonderful opportunity to see a German design! I was very impressed with the layout inside and out of U-995. Truly a marvelous vessel for its time. Reading about the German naval history next door was also quite an eye-opener.

Plan to spend at least 2 hours here if you want to read up on the history as well as your the sub. I spent 3 hours here and I would have stayed longer if I could have.

Getting to go into World War 2 German U- Boat U-995 was the main draw, but the observation monument and naval museum proved to be extremely informative and interesting. Very well done, with a number of artifacts and serving as a reconciliation between the Allies and the Germans. If you like history and museums/ memorials to those who served this is a must see. All ages were there enjoying this, and the cost is very minimal (less than 10 Euros pp to go into both). If you are on a cruise out of Kiel, this is a 25 or so minute cab ride or you can book an excursion through the ship with an airport transfer to Hamburg. Well worth it. Good idea to watch the movie 'Das Boot' before going if you like war history. Gives a German perspective of life in a U-Boat.

Ever wondered what it was like to be in the Capt Henrich shoes in the movie Das Boot? Well you can, if you go to Laboe in the northern Kiel area. The VII C-class U 995 is “dry docked” on the beach here and is a very nice museum piece which you may enter and walk through at your leisure. It’s perfectly preserved and you can visit almost all areas accessible to the crew. This one was used to hunt the waters around Norway during its tour in the WW2. The U 995 sunk at least five vessels belonging to the Soviets and Americans. The boat was surrendered to the Norwegians at the end of the war. A perfect visit during an otherwise closed Germany on a Sunday. Probably easiest to reach by car, combine with a beach visit off the weathers nice.

If you are 20 miles or so near; a must! Fun for both kids and adults in my opinion. 4,5 euro fee is fair. Not that much info provided inside but you can explore by yourself.

It's a wonderful piece of history and German engineering. I really like that it's pretty much presented in its original state, there are (almost) no glass walls, cut-outs etc, it's as it was in the war, you can feel how claustrophobic it must have been.
