Místo zbořené Pražské brány

Pražská (nebo také dolejší) brána byla postavena ve 13. století jako jedna z hlavních při vstupu do města. Stavba s věží stávala u domů č. 109 a 163. U ní byla mohutná dubová vrata a nad nimi černé prkno s německým nápisem "Královské krajské město Písek v Prácheňském kraji". Brána byla bez vnějšího opevnění, protože na ni navazoval Kamenný most zpevněný dvěma dalšími branami. Osa brány se neshodovala s osou mostu, ale obě se sbíhaly v úhlu - útočníci přicházející od mostu tak museli nastavit obráncům svou pravou stranu, kterou neměli krytou štítem. Pražská brána byla zbořena v roce 1849 na základě rozhodnutí krajského úřadu. Proti tomu protestovali místní i tehdejší purkmistr. Archeologové Prácheňského muzea při rekonstrukci náměstí zdokumentovali v jižní partii průběh a skladbu kamenného zdiva části předbraní Pražské brány. Půdorys této části předbraní je dnes vyznačen v dlažbě odlišným tónem, tím je zvýrazněn původní koridor vedoucí do města.

The Prague (or lower) gate was built in the 13th century as one of the main ones when entering the city. The building with the tower stood at houses No. 109 and 163. Next to it was a massive oak gate and above them a black plank with the German inscription "Royal Regional Town of Písek in the Prácheň Region". The gate was without external fortifications, because it was connected to the Stone Bridge reinforced with two other gates. The axis of the gate did not match with the axis of the bridge, but both converged at an angle - the attackers coming from the bridge had to show their right side to the defenders, which they did not have covered with a shield. The Prague Gate was demolished in 1849 on the basis of a decision of the regional authority, although Písek citizens and the former mayor protested against this. During the reconstruction of the square in its southern part, the archaeologists of local Prácheň Museum documented the course and composition of the stone masonry of part of the Prague Gate forecourt. The floor plan of this part is today marked in a different tone in the paving, thus highlighting the original corridor leading to the city.
