The Takeaway on Melville, formerly known as the GV Chicken Ranch, and way back when Noah played fullback for Waaia, simply the “Fish & Chip Shop” remains an institution in the regional town of Numurkah. A trip to the fish & chip was always a special treat growing up in a small country town, usually after watching Noah play footy, or when family came to visit. I have fond memories of the coloured plastic strip curtains in the doorway, the fly paper strips hanging from the roof, the Big M and Chiko Roll posters on the walls, and the jars of pickled onions and boiled eggs that where plucked straight out of the jar with big burly hands when ordered. Sure, the etiquette & price may have changed over the years, but what about the taste? Let’s find out.

Burger Name: The Lot

Overall Appearance: 10 Points
OK, this has to be the best-looking burger that I have come across so far on my journey. This is almost perfect in appearance, I think the Tetris of burgers, perfectly layered, and almost like it was created using a set square and string lines. Magic.

Bun: 10 Points
A good standard takeaway burger bun, fresh as a daisy and tasty. It stayed together for the journey despite the juiciness of the ingredients it was holding.

Meat: 10 Points
Juicy, tasty, thick, and beefy just the way a burger should be. I didn’t confirm if it was made on the premises. I will endeavour to ask on my next visit.

Cheese: 10 Points
A standard cheese slice here and it served the purpose well. Placed nicely under the beef burger to soften a little with the heat. Nice.

Anything not the Burger: 10 Points
Bacon, Egg, Cheese, Beetroot, Tomato, Onion, Lettuce. All the requirements here for the perfect burger with the lot. Very happy with this. The pineapple debate will always be a hot topic, it was definitely not needed here.

Sauces: 10 Points
Your standard tomato sauce here that marries well with the other ingredients. Simple and doesn’t overpower the remainder of the burger.

Messiness: 10 Points
Yeah, an enjoyable juicy, runny burger that despite the laws of physics, stayed together, until the last bite. Definitely a 3 napkin clean up this one and tasted so good that I didn’t care.

Burgerness: 10 Points
This is exactly what you want from a burger from a takeaway / fish & chip shop. Dare I say, even more memorable than some of the fancy, schmancy more expensive burgers sampled from gourmet establishments. Ticked all the boxes.

Price: 10 Points
I don’t want to term this a cheap burger, so I will say that this is the most value for money burger that I have found so far. All of the above for a cracking $11.00.

Service: 10 Points
Very friendly and accommodating staff. Nice, clean shop with a few tables for you to enjoy your meal when the weather isn’t so good outside. They were also happy to accommodate a 15-year-old that was fanging for a BLT for lunch, it wasn’t on the menu, but they whipped up one anyway. They also do a pretty good coffee as well.

80-94: This is, excuse me, a mighty fine burger.

20-49: I’m glad I ate this once so I know I never have to eat it again.

Best traditional style burger with the lot I have had in a while. Why go Maccas when you can have a burger like this. Perfect hospitality by lovely ladies to top it off

Awesome service, as an out of towner I was made to feel very welcome. Fried food a little greasy, but still great. Awesome burgers.

We spent the Labour Day long weekend in Numurkah.
We decided to order our food here on our first night.
Food was beautiful and not oily at all.
There was a missing item when we got home. I gave them a call to re-order and they were very apologetic and delivered the item within 10mins.
Highly recommended 👌🏽

Was visiting family and grabbed take away. Fish was yummy and huge, but the burger will have me going back everytime I'm in town. Fantastic!!!
