Our tour guide was friendly and well versed in the history of the site. The museum building tells a fascinating tale about the miners and the site’s history. There are many old vehicles that you are welcome to sit in and enjoy. We enjoyed our visit

A great coal mining museum. Easy to find and sealed roads right to museum car parking area. We were greeted by the friendly museum guide at the old office building where he gave us a quick verbal tour of the site. The office building has many displays in each of the rooms, some of which are videos showing what underground working conditions were like in the mines.
The bath building contains larger mining equipment both old and new. A side room, where the mine workers once showered after ending their shift, is a fanatic visual display. The wife of one of the miners is brought to life in a holographic story telling of a tragic incident as she walks amongst items in the display. Amazing when she lights the miners cap lamp.

Outside the buildings there is mining equipment of all description right up to the poppet head standing over the now sealed No: 2 shaft into the mine.

Great value. I would recommend you get here when the gates open so you have ample time to look at all there is to see.

Beautiful museum with a whole lot of history. We made it just in time for the tour, which was informative and educational. The guide had a history of mining, so was able to provide first hand experience. Reasonably priced at $5 for adult entry. Final hologram section was exceptional, and also got me shedding a tear. Highly recommend spending an hour there.

fantastic place to have a look around and see a bit of history from the early coal days. you can drive out anytime and have a look around, just be aware that there is a working rail workshop next door so you will not be allowed to go and look at the old trains.

otherwise the weekends will be the best time to catch a local (volunteer) guide and have a chat about the old days.

Walked out with some knowledge and insights about mines! Wasn't expecting much, but we actually quite enjoyed the little tour.

Love this place. It's so random. Hologram presentation is absolutely exceptional. Even our dog was allowed in to see it and go through the museum / house ( although we were the only ones there so maybe that was why and he was well behaved I wouldn't count on it)
Super friendly guides. Yes can look deserted if you arrive at certain times that is part of the charm. Not your usual touristy destination.
Amazing place.
Thank you Lithgow 💗 😊

Great tour, we had the guide to ourselves and he couldn't help but provide all the information to make the tour interesting. Excellent value at 5 bucks! Drop into the Blast furnace ruins on the way out.

I worked with Michael and Ray on a wedding photoshoot, and they were both so friendly and accommodating. I really appreciated your help in showing us around and assisting us on the shoot. Would highly recommend this beautiful venue to anyone looking for somewhere to hold your wedding or event - it is so visually striking, and set in a quiet and serene area. It's so great to see the interesting architecture of this place being used for weddings, as it's so full of character. Thanks again for everything!

A must go when you are in the area!
What makes this place special and worthwhile is the excellent guide who takes you around the site sharing his knowledge about the area and the industry in an interactive and engaging way that makes you re-live history.
Extremely good value for money as well (5 dollar). Thumbs up!

Family friendly free picnic day out for kids. Bring a frisbee, football or practice with a boomerang.
Dog friendly. Water, toilets, tables, chairs provided. Wheelchair accessible. Sealed road access. No walking involved to access picnic facilities.
Very large grassed areas for kids and heaps of exhibits to be photographed in/on. How good is that! Real hands on stuff with no one telling them "that's off limits".
Guided tour $3. Working exhibits that are turnkey & driveaway if you had the inclination. They don't even have that @ Gulgong.
Check times. Opens midday. Take rubbish bag. Place is spotless. Note: Large greys live here.

Amazing tour with a very knowledgeable guide. I have learnt a lot about the mining community in Lithgow through engaging talks. Would highly recommend the holographic video theatre.

Thankyou Rod on your knowledge and making the whole experience truly amazing. For $5 it was worth every cent. The history of the mine and workers was very interesting and makes you realise how hard they had it many years ago

A great display and explanation of Lithgow's mining, railway and power generation history. The old State Mine buildings are available for functions with regular people using them for wedding receptions. Well worth a visit.

Don't skip this place if you are in the area. Very nice small museum, telling about coal mines in the area. Kids are welcome to climb the machines and feel like real miners
