Stunning natural vistas await at Tomaree Head Summit, a must-visit in Nelson Bay. Having visited three times, the panoramic views never cease to amaze. Despite its official difficulty rating of 5, I found the hike more accessible, closer to a 2 or 3, even as an occasional hiker.

We started our hike on a weekend morning, and this was just lovely! This is a wonderful nature trail which locals frequent, and the view is lovely. You get to see Shoal bay, Fingal Beach, and the greater oceans which was so beautiful on a sunny day. Breeze was comfortable and we took a total of 40 mins to hike up and down, including lots of rest time for pictures along the way! Strongly encourage visitors to check out this place.

The magnificent views are your reward for walking up this mountain. Although I have bad knees I made it to the top. The stairs have been recently upgraded and make walking up easier. Parking can be a little difficult but there is parking leading up to the mountain so grab one when you see it. Also so extra parking on the hill to the right when you get to the end of the road.

A must visit, offers spectacular panorama view. Low difficulty, (summit trail) can be done moderately in about 15 mins, 160m elevation gain. Most of the staircases have been replaced/rebuilt, nice and steady.

Warning: be mindful of snake encounters, especially around the mid of the trail, on the high (retaining wall) side.

An intense walk with views.
8 year old child handled better than most adults - lots of kids along the walk.
Some of the path can be slippery if soles are worn in.

1 hour to the top, with some stops for photos along the way.
2 hours for entire journey (includes stopping at the top for 20ish minutes.
It does put you out of breath as inclined 3/4 of the way up.

Brilliant views. 1L-2L water sufficient as only short hike.
Seats along the walk and seats at top also.

FYI - Snakes can be seen in the area

A must-visit on your journey along the East Coast. The trail is great for hiking. 1 hour for 161 meters in elevation. The view is breathtakingly beautiful. Worth a trip. 5 stars.

The view is insanely beautiful at the summit.

The hike is moderately intense with multiple incline slopes. We had a good workout from the hike!

Please dont be silly like me wearing slippers for the hike.

Highly recommend covered shoes for a comfortable hike.

We came for an afternoon hike and the clear skies gave a really beautiful blue reflection of the oceans.

Short, easy walk to the summit. Closed shoes are recommended. There is no mud, but the paved road can be slippery. About halfway there the stairs start.
We went on a cloudy day and the summit was windy but not too bad. Fantastic views of Zenith Beach and the other bays, and around the summit you have a 360 view. If you have done other hikes this one is fairly easy and quick. The views are beautiful, I definitely recommend it. Be warned tough, it might be closed when you go: there are signs that say this trail will be closed from April 26th to June 2nd, 2023, to enable the installation of new steel stairways.

Fantastic short hike. It is steep but just take your time and you will be fine. Kids aged 5, 8 and 10 all completed it with me. Lots of spots to stop and rest if needed and the views are spectacular.

Great hike to stretch your legs and catch the beautiful scenery. Suggest to go during sunset or a beautiful blue day. Wear good shoes as the path is constantly on the incline. Worth it. About 20 minutes each way for average walkers.

The most spectacular view I have seen since I left brisbane. The view is just breathing, the Crystal water, sand ,ocean and the two islands at the back. Mamma Mia! A short walk or a long one you decide, as you can walk along the shore.

The 360 degree views are worth the moderate climb. Easy climb for anyone with a bit of fitness. Stairs and rails near the top as it gets steeper. We visited on a rainy day but still great views and a rainbow to boot. Will be back in finer weather. A must do while in the area.

Am amazing view, certainly worth the walk. It was not an easy walk and it took my wife and I quite a few stops on the way up. Worth it in the end. They to do it on a cooler day if you can

Great views but did like getting told off by security when walking back on the road back from top of the mountain.
Here are a few photo from to and back and also from the top.
I have told to walk along the bottom or the path but not the road back down.
"NO PUBLIC ACCESS" sign.

Truely a great place to visit if you in the area . The way up is not so difficult for the fit ones , once you get to half way you start to see the amazing views ,
Up at the summit it’s breathtaking, I always like to watch the sun rise so I do it early morning, the way down is a breeze . It takes overall 20 minute slow pace to go up , I enjoyed it , then had a queens breakfast !

It is such a lovely place offering picturesque views overall. The hike is easy, with lovely look out areas. From the top, various bays can be seen (Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Anna Bay One Mile, Salamander Bay and some islands. It is an easy hike.

Aug-22: still amazing, the stairs are still super narrow, but it looks like they are going to upgrade the pathways. No point going to the gun placements, just head straight to the summit. Approx 30 mins each way if there aren't too many people.

Dec-16: Spectacular! The view at the top is partially obscured by trees but the way up there are many great photo ops. The metal stairways are very narrow so on a busy day there is a fair amount of waiting for people to go up or come down. Definitely will be doing this again.

Fantastic views over the bay and Shole Bay! Well worth the exercise! Our little 4yo was ok with the stairs and platforms and was super eager to get to the top. A fun experience for the whole family! Bring some snacks and have a picnic on the top while being stunned by the view.
