The Cape General Store

Stayed in Cape Paterson for 6 days over the Anzac Day long weekend. We had takeaway and morning coffees from the Channel store 3-4 times during our stay. Wasn’t sure what to expect from the small town store, but was phenomenally impressed. One of the best burgers I’ve ever had in my 40+yrs, and that includes all the places you may have to queue for in Melbourne.

I got a Aussie type burger with egg cheese bacon and beetroot.

It’s just the details
- American melty cheese
- bacon was crispy on the outside
- meat Patty was the right thickness/seasoning/diameter and caramelized well
- good brioche bun and toasted well
- other ingredients were all in good balance
- and it wasn’t too soggy or too dry, just the right moisture level.

The wife tried the fish burger and rated it 9.5/10, generous servings of tender cooked fish fillet.

We also had fish and chips and their breakky burgers on other days and all of it was top notch cooking. I don’t usually post food reviews but this place was worthy and suprised with their quality. Top work to the team in the kitchen.

Was also a fan of the hand cut fries.

Have enjoyed all of my meals so far. So great to have a edible option. Haven’t had the fish and chips yet, but it looks fresh and really delicious.

Quite easily the best chips on the Bass Coast, we saw them advertised & had to give them a go on our recent visit. Absolutely phenomenal, can't wait to go back!

I need everyone to go here so they stay open so I can continue going here.

What was a solid local fish and chip shop, has become a destination fish and chip and burger shop.

- They've sourced high quality local produce, so kickarse breads make for a damn fine sandwich/toastie in the arvo.

- The fish is insanely crispy and actually tastes of flake and not battered white substance. Tastes fresh and tastes good.

- The chips are wonderful. A little of the softer side but using a more flavourful and smoother textured potato than most chippies, these are reminiscent of Schnitz chips but better. Hand cut, skin on, and honestly taste like sticks of silky mashed potato.

- The burgers are not to be ordered lightly. Yes they may look reasonable from the menu. Nothing frilly and stupid, but a few interesting and twists and flavours. Sounds good for the price... But then you see the size of them. You'd be paying $25-30 for these in Melbourne and calling it good value.

I've seen this shop/location change hands more than a few times. I hope these guys are making a decent living and good turnover, because they make a damn fine meal. The pub next door is booked out almost every weekend, and I expect this place will be seeing similar numbers very soon.

Excellent fish tacos, crispy hot fish, good slaw, avocado, hot chili, cool cucumber yoghurt.

Ignore past reviews, under new management and I can safely attest that this is the best fish and chips I have had.

I had the fried flake, potato cake, dimsum and calamari. The seafood is extremely fresh and juicy and there is very minimal residual oil. Extremely Crispy.

Potato cakes are the best I have had, and the chips are homemade hand-cut (fresh and not frozen). They taste fantastic and different to other standard fried chips you will have from other venues.

You can gauge how good quality fish and chips and by how you feel after the meal (with the inevitable food coma due to the fried nature), but with this place I felt great after eating it (and I had alot of food, so that's saying something).

10/10 best place in the region. Will eat again when I visit.

Excellent bread, croissants, coffee. Suddenly Cape Paterson has a Melbourne style cafe. Good looking menu. Have yet to try fish and chips.

Just had fish and chips for T. It was the best I've had, flake was juiciest ive ever had so moist, dim sim absolutely huge and tasty with a little kick, and freshly hand cut and cooked chips was ridiculous nice. Amazing little shop.

Very friendly staff. More than willing to serve us outside as we had no face masks(medically exempt).
Fresh hot flatty tails and chips.
Bit pricey, but for a small country town on a hot summers day, they gotta make money somehow. I'll definitely be going back again.

Best fish and chips I had in my life

I have eaten here a few times now and cannot fault it, the service is fantastic, the store is always clean and well presented and the food is the best I have had in a very long time, always fresh and never soggy and good quality ingredients! The hot chips are by far the best I've had! 10/10

Fresh Pumpkin, quinoa and feta salad priced to please, was absolutely beautiful, delicious and wholesome.
