This is one of many mathematical monuments in the Syke's Sanctuary on the monument walk in Railton
Syke's Sanctuary is dedicated to
Norman Sykes, who born & died in 1896 - 1981
was a Scholar, musician, engineer & a world War 1 pilot.
Born in england, Norman was described as Railton's most colourful resident He has also been described as one of Tasmania's earliest conservationists. His dreams was to live as close to nature as he could and gave up city life to do so. He lived in a shack on this 40 acres of bushland and donated this beautiful peice of property to the community with the instructions that it be converted into a sanctuary for birds and fauna.

A great place for walking, wildlife and Saturday morning #parkrun. Just off the Tasmanian Trail right in the middle of Railton.

A beautiful reserve with plenty of birdlife, steeped in the history of a colourful local and his legacy. We visited in November 2019, apparently after a fire had gone through part of the reserve, but it is recovering quickly, and a large part was apparently not affected. A peaceful oasis, and a lovely place to sit and cogitate in solitary.

At first site this looks like an ordinary and relatively mundane forest reserve. However, upon reaching the centre of the park one comes to a number of esoteric stone tablets that must be some 7 or 8 feet high. On them are listed a bunch of formulas and strange quotes from ancient Mesopotamian and c Chinese texts. Upon further investigation I found out this reserve used to be the property of an eccentric hermit numerologist who after serving in ww1 and becoming disgruntled with humanity, left for the Bush and dedicated himself to some sort of mathematical divination. This story made the place feel a little more eerie and sacred than your average park in a run down town.

This was a lovely oasis in the bush with picnic tables and cryptic monuments. Only 5 minutes off the track. Move over Henry David Thoreau. Much more should be known about this man. Some pleasant short walks here too.
