Great spot for family camping. Has 2x drop toilet. A creek and river so that you can collect water for washing (but bring own drinking water). There are a few picnic tables and fire pits, and a few other scattered fire pits around. Setup on the south side for morning sun. Close to the Ruins walk. Just up the road from Newnes Hotel where a few items can be purchased if needed e.g. firewood.
Just a side note, I had no phone coverage here (with Telstra), great IMO, but some might consider that an issue.

A very good place to camp free if you are used to or want to experience life with only basic facility. Camping ground is in a valley area making it very spectacular and secure. The ground has only toilet facility for water and shower you have to use the natural resource i.e river 😉. If you can't manage the rough camping then there are rooms availble for hire. Must book in advance as there is great demand for it.
We camped in the month of April and it was pretty cold with fog and frost which didn't clear till 10am.
The best part is the various bush walks and trails that you can do. Overall a unique experience.

Beautiful hidden gem surround by sandstone cliffs with a creek crossing. Lots of kangaroos jumping around. The place is peaceful & unique. Also, the scenery from top of the valley is just amazing.

The road to get there is very bumpy though, SUV is recommended. Also no reception available.

Recently stayed at the Newnes campground called Little Capertee. This was due to the river crossing and other campground options being gated and locked. Little Capertee was still a great option for the night. It features a wide open area for setup, several fire pit rings and two drop style toilets. Would recommend if you have a large group wanting to camp together.

Easy to find. Big space with no marked sites. A seperate area with 4WD access only. The road in is a bit rough but fine for 2WD. Drop toilets available. Shower available at the hotel for $5 which is 10-15 walk from the campsite. Super interesting walks around. Glow worm tunnel a must - allow 2-2.5 hrs.

Finally got here, it’s worth it. Spent 4 nights and loved the walks, exploring the Industrial Ruins and the scenery was superb. The Little Capertee Campground is accessed with an easy to negotiate creek crossing. Coming into Newnes is about 10kms of Unsealed Road which had a couple of potholes from recent wet weather.

Amazing views lots of space. Road is paved all the way up to the last 7km. I got up there in my Toyota Yaris so most people should be fine. Nice walks straight from the campsites and lots of campfire spots. Bathrooms are drop toilets with no taps but are clean and tidy. Glow worm tunnel walk was great too.

Amazing place to stay for a few days. We stopped here for 3 nights in late May. Was freezing cold at night, getting down to zero, frost in the morning. In winter you only get a few hours sun here, from 10am to 3pm when we were there, be prepared for that if you rely on solar power. We went through a lot of firewood since there wasn't much sun. Make sure to do the Ruins Walk (2 hours, easy), and the Glow Worm Tunnel Walk (4 hours medium). Recommend driving the few km back down the road to the start of the Glow Worm Tunnel Track at the creek crossing (take your boots off). It took us 4.5 hours return, average fitness and took our time in the tunnel.

The campground is echo-y with minimal privacy, but plenty of space to spread out. No Telstra or Optus service in the campground or the whole road in. Drop toilets were good.

Really shocked this beautiful campsite wasn't more overrun or expensive to stay at. Either it's a hidden gem or we got lucky during a lull in corona. Kangaroos and other animals hanging about. Lots of space. Nice nearby river to cool down in. The afternoon sun hitting the cliffs is a view that rivals the most famous lookouts in the blue mountains. This could have easily been turned into a car park or tourist attraction. If you're not 4WDing in make sure you take your time and drive very cautiously on the last few k's as the road is full of holes and bumpy.

Great place to camp what a spectacular place, everything was clean including picnic tables, toilets and general grounds.
Nice little creek to cool off from the sun, good access and plenty to see and do for a few days. My wife and kids had a great time. Great memories made

The campground is remote and cellular won't work here. Two toilets with no flush water. Bring enough drinking water. Before entering the site, there is a 4-5km uncealed bumpy road and a small creek, so SUV is recommended.

Glowworm tunnel is worthwhile exploring if you would like to spend half day. You need to be barefoot to cross the creek while entering the trail. There are two directions of the circled trail. I recommend to use the southern trail (not via old coach road and pagoda track) which features rain forest (small waterfalls, bird chirping, plantations) before reaching the tunnel.

Glowworm tunnel is curvey. You will see no lights while in the middle 150m. Glowworms are on one side of the tunnel. Turn off your lighting (recommend 900+ lumin) and let your eyes adapt to the darkness.

Beautiful valley view, great camping spot with plenty of picnic tables and campfire pits, toilets with tissue. We had a lot of fun, Wombats kangaroos possums around our tents, 4WD touring route, hiking.

Very popular place even in cold weather. Awesome memory except for a group of selfish people playing music and a man kept talking loud until 3am, very noisy in a quiet valley. Still can't believe a man can keep talking like a baby bird. 👎🏼

Great 3 days spent away, amazing views from my tent when waking up. On foggy days the mountains looks creepy but amazing. Committed to the 8km walk up the mountain on the almost unrecognisable train line to the glow worm tunnel and the views from up there are just well you need to go up and see for yourself.
Walked to the industrial ruins and you see that nature will devour anything in its path.
Take a good torch with you and glow sticks to put on your tent cables so you don't trip over them at night it gets dark and the sky becomes spectacular as you can see the stars like you've never seen it before.

One of the best camping areas in NSW. Plenty to see and explore the local ruins and Bush walks. Glow worm tunnel is nearby and well worth a look. The surrounding rock faces are truly spectacular at all times of the day. Very good drop loo's, and well established fire rings and picnic tables. The nearby hotel museum is a must see. The fact that this is a free camp is amazing!!

Beautiful campground with pit toilets, bring your own water and firewood. Kangaroos and heaps of native animals hop around the campsite. Has many picnic tables and firepits scattered around. Camp next to car

My favourite campground. Very peaceful and simple.
Nothing like sitting around a campfire while you gaze at the stars!

No showers but the drop toilets were very clean.

There is a beautiful cliff face surrounding the grounds and plenty of wildlife. We woke up to kangaroos everywhere.

There are lots of great walks close by. The ruins are very interesting - was fun to imagine what life was like in the old times.

Camping was excellent with a wonderful group. I have camped there for 2 nights. I did enjoy camp fire and cooking for a group. This ground is accessible to a hotel if you need a shower or toilet. However, you can access a free toilet in the ground. I would suggest you to go with complete warm cloths to avoid loss of heat.

Great place to camp with kids and to get out into the wild lots to do here like the glowworm tunnel and the ruins from the shale oil days. The staff / owners at the hotel are extremely interesting and friendly not to be missed.

Welcome to Mother Nature’s amphitheatre. Dramatic sandstone cliffs and proud eucalypt trees make for a majestic backdrop at this beautiful, grassy, flat campground by the Wolgan river.

Pitch your tent and enjoy a picnic under the trees before heading out to explore the tracks, tunnels and ovens of the historic shale oil ruins nearby, or cool off with a paddle or lilo in the river. There are easy walks for taking in the dramatic scenery. Enjoy a fascinating journey back into the past on Newnes Industrial Ruins walk, and kids will love visiting the luminous Glow Worm tunnel, just a short drive away.

You can also camp on the other side of the river; however you can only access this camping area by foot or 4WD across the ford near the Newnes Hotel.

Newnes campground closed due to landslide at Wolgan Gap
Newnes campground, including Newnes Industrial Ruins, is closed until further notice due to road collapse and continuing land slip risk at Wolgan Gap following recent heavy rain.

Beautiful and peaceful Retreat. Amazing history and scenery. There is an abundance of fauna and if you sit still enough there are amazing birdlife all around. If you love nature and want a quiet place to get away from everything, then this is a great place only just over 2 hrs drive from Sydney. There are no amenities though, so be prepared.
